125. Mount Hoodin onnettomuus

11. toukokuuta vuonna 1986 Timberline Lodge hiihtokeskuksen edestä Mount Hoodin huippua valloittamaan lähti yhteensä 20 ihmistä. 15 nuorta sekä 5 aikuista. Tunnelma oli odottava ja innostunut, eikä kukaan heistä tuolloin aavistanut, etteivät he kaikki tulisi selviämään takaisin. 27. päivä huhtikuuta vuonna 1982, 7- vuotias Melissa heräsi kovaääniseen paukahdukseen ja kirkumiseen. Tämän jälkeen hänen elämänsä ei koskaan enää ollut entisensä. Aamuyön tunneilla heidän kotiinsa hyökännyt mies oli murhannut hänen äitinsä JoAnn Taten, ja hyökännyt tämän jälkeen myös Melissan sekä hänen 4- vuotiaan siskonsa Reneen kimppuun. Kun Melissalta kysyttiin, kuka tämän järkyttävän hyökkäyksen takana oli, tämä vastasi tekijän olleen Bill. 5. päivä toukokuuta vuonna 2008, vesijeteillä ajamassa ollut pariskunta näki Katawba joen varrella kantoon törmänneen auton ja sen vieressä nuoren naisen ruumiin. 20-vuotiaan Irinan kuolinsyy selvisi hänen kaulaansa sidotuista kolmesta eri nyöristä, mutta mitä hänelle oli tapahtunut tuon aamupäivän aikana? Ennen kuolemaansa, Irina oli käynyt tekemässä koulullaan kokeen, tallettanut shekkejä ja lahjoittanut hyväntekeväisyyteen useita kasseja tavaroitaan.  Catawba joella oli tuona päivänä useita rakennusmiehiä sekä kaksi kalastajaa. Heistä kukaan ei ollut kuullut Irinan huutavan apua, eivät edes nämä kalastajat, jotka olivat olleet alle 100 metrin päässä tapahtumapaikasta.  Tutkijoille hahmottui kuitenkin äkkiä kuva tuon päivän tapahtumista, eikä kulunut kauaa, kun pidätys tapahtui.
