This podcast is an extension of the revolutionary journalism of Spring Magazine. As an organization, our aim is to help advance working class struggles fighting against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, settler colonialism, and for all people oppressed under capitalism. Spring is also a learning organization. This means that we take our politics to the streets and compare it to the lived experiences of the working class, and ourselves as a part of that class. The purpose of this podcast is to act as another medium through which this dialogue can occur. The format will likely evolve over time, but at its core we want it to serve as a tool to amplify the words and actions of activists across Canada.

episode The Year of Capitalist Crisis on Film feat. Carlie Macfie & Santiago Moran-Izquierdo cover

The Year of Capitalist Crisis on Film feat. Carlie Macfie & Santiago Moran-Izquierdo

In 2025 we saw an influx of films made in response to the current political moment. While political filmmaking can be expected from documentaries and independent films, we notably saw political films coming straight out of Hollywood. Ahead of the 2026 Oscars, co-host Sarah Shahid sat down with Spring members Carlie Macfie & Santiago Moran-Izquierdo to discuss three Hollywood films that address the multiple modern day crises affecting the working class.  Spring resources against the war on Iran - https://stopbombingiran.ca/ [https://stopbombingiran.ca/] / https://springmag.ca/resources-stop-bombing-iran [https://springmag.ca/resources-stop-bombing-iran]  This episode was produced in Tkaronto on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. episode From Claudia Jones to Hossam El-Hamalawy: What is revolutionary journalism? (RED OCTOBER 2025) cover

From Claudia Jones to Hossam El-Hamalawy: What is revolutionary journalism? (RED OCTOBER 2025)

This month's episode was recorded at Spring's annual Red October. The session took place on October 25, 2025 as part of the course “What is Revolutionary Socialism?” and features Spring Members Ayan Tani, Sarah Shahid and Emma Paling.  “As revolutionaries, we must engage in battles not just on the ground and picket lines, but also in the realm of ideas," Egyptian journalist and revolutionary Hossam El-Hamalawy has said.  Journalism is a vital tool for socialists to use in this battle of ideas. But the revolutionary newspapers of Lenin and Claudia Jones are not the only publishing format available to socialists anymore. The internet, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and podcasting offer new opportunities — and new challenges — for socialists to organize and disseminate their messages to the working class. Red October is an annual conference organized by Spring Magazine to discuss socialist ideas and put them in action. What Zohran Mamdani's win means for socialists feat. Emily Lemmerman

Last month, Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race in New York. In January, he will take office. This campaign opened up the imagination for progressives not only in New York but across the world. In this episode, Sarah Shahid speaks with Emily Lemmerman, an organizer, member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and formerly the Communications Director in Zohran Mamdani’s State Assembly office. They discuss what opportunities and challenges a campaign like Mamdani’s provides for socialists interested in raising the confidence of the working class. episode CUPW Postal Workers Strike & The Fight Against Privatization cover

CUPW Postal Workers Strike & The Fight Against Privatization

Mail deliveries in Canada have been disrupted after postal workers across the country walked off the job. The strike comes after the Canadian government authorized widespread reforms to Canada Post that would shut post offices and end door-to-door deliveries for millions of people. The government intends to replace postal workers with community mailboxes, speed up deliveries using subcontracted gig labour, and quietly hand over profitable routes to private couriers. Far more than a fight for improved wages and improved working conditions, the strike is about the rights of Canadians to good public services, and about resisting the destruction of good unionized jobs through privatization. This strike comes alongside other action across Canada to fight increasing privatization of public services.  To discuss all of this, the CUPW strike, the fight to protect public services and public service workers, and what is at stake if we lose Canada Post, Spring member Hiva sat down in Hamilton with CUPW members Dawnie, Kevin, and Karl. If you enjoyed this episode and would like to discuss these ideas in person, as well as learn new ones and connect with other socialists from across Canada, please join us at the TMU student centre in Toronto from the 24th to 26th of October for Spring's annual Red October conference. Red October is a whole weekend of socialist ideas and strategy, with more than 25 sessions spread over six courses. episode Canada’s increased military spending and why we must oppose it feat. Samuel Tetelepta & Alex Hunsberger cover

Canada’s increased military spending and why we must oppose it feat. Samuel Tetelepta & Alex Hunsberger

Mark Carney’s recent commitment to increase Canada’s military spending to 5% of the country’s GDP by 2036 is the most ambitious investment into national defence in Canada’s history since the Second World War. It comes hand-in-hand with his announcement to cut federal spending by 7.5% by next year. In today’s episode, Spring members Samuel Tetelepta and Alex Hunsberger unpack why Canada and countries across the world are pivoting to an arms economy and how that ultimately goes against the interest of the working class.  Please consider donating to Spring Magazine’s annual fund drive at https://www.gofundme.com/f/spring-magazines-2025-fund-drive [https://www.gofundme.com/f/spring-magazines-2025-fund-drive].
