Ep 21 : Sandra Gutierrez : Food Historian, Chef & Cookbook Writer

This conversation is full of knowledge, history, and wisdom. I'm excited to share this beautiful talk with Sandra Gutierrez, a bilingual, award-winning journalist, food historian, professional cooking instructor, and author of six cookbooks. She is considered one of the top national experts on Latin American Foodways and on the United States Southern Regional cuisine. Sandra discovered the New Southern-Latino culinary movement in 1996, a rare and impressive achievement.  In 2021, Gutierrez was honored by the Smithsonian Institute as a Woman to Know and as one of the seven Latinas Who Shaped American Culture. Sandra also has a permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian, which features Kate Blohm Photography.  Her most recent book, Latinísmo: Home Recipes from the Twenty-One Countries of Latin America is the first of its kind. Hannah Jane Dantzscher is the Owner of Wake Refill, a zero waste business whose mission is to pair environmental care with compassion and education, serving the place that she’s always called home. Hannah Jane grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, where she fell in love with the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. Boating, sailing, and learning about local and global ecosystems have always been some of her favorite pastimes. This connection to nature has deeply influenced the way she lives, and the values that shape her business practices today. Hannah Jane studied International Studies with a focus on Latin America at the College of Charleston. During that time, she spent semesters living in Cuba, Chile and Argentina. Alongside these studies, she dove into the systems of global trade and waste trade. This is where she fundamentally shifted the way she thought about consumerism and how the things we buy, use, and throw "away" are connected to people and places far beyond our view, often at great cost. Kayla Twomey Flamman is the owner of Miller Gallery in Charleston, SC. Her love for art started during her childhood, growing up in Greenville, SC. After completing her Bachelor's from High Point University and Master's from Webster University, she started working in contemporary fine art galleries across the South, which eventually led her to owning one herself. Kayla also paints from her home studio in Charleston, with her husband and pup, Finn. Her surroundings often inspire her artworks, ranging from skyscapes to still lifes. Her ultimate goal is to bring joy to the moments in our everyday lives through art. In this conversation, we discuss what it takes to acquire and run a small business while staying balanced and forward-thinking. We also get into the details of pivoting careers, the behind-the-scenes of the gallery world, and all the many ways art shows up in our lives. Over the years, she’s collaborated with renowned publications like Zagat and Atlanta Magazine and served as Photo Director at Whetstone Magazine, where her work continuously celebrated the intersection of food and social impact. Lyric now works as the Lead Food Writer for Chattanooga Times Free Press, where she brings her readers a weekly series of "Where to Eat Next", curating an authentic exploration of the local food scene in Chattanooga.  Driven by a desire to understand the world through food, Lyric has traveled across the globe, using culinary traditions as a gateway to have deeper conversations around race, identity, and culture.  Through her writing, photography, and in-person workshops, Lyric continues to inspire others to connect with the world of food.
