Count Carl von Cosel believed he had met his soulmate when he laid eyes on Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos in 1930. From the start, though, their romance had its share of problems. First, they were both already married, but Carl could easily pretend neither of their spouses existed. Second, Elena had been diagnosed with the then-fatal prognosis of tuberculosis, but even after she died, Carl wasn’t deterred.
