If you’re a community or occupational therapist who feels mentally full, scattered, or constantly behind, this podcast is for you.The Cognitive Capacity Chat is where we break down cognitive load, executive function, and functional cognition in a way that actually makes sense in real clinical work.Because this is the reality: most therapists don’t have a time problem. They have a cognitive load problem. And underneath all of it, cognition underpins everything. How you plan your day. How you make decisions. How you communicate. How you manage your caseload. How you show up for your clients. In your day-to-day work, you are constantly holding and processing information, switching between tasks, regulating yourself, and making complex decisions. But no one teaches you how to manage that. This podcast will.Inside each episode, you’ll learn how to: Understand cognitive load and how it shows up in your work  Apply a functional cognition lens to both your clients and yourself  Strengthen your executive function as a therapist  Reduce mental overload and stop feeling constantly behind  Build systems and workflows that actually work with your brain This is not about working harder. It is about working in a way your brain can actually sustain. If you want to feel clearer, more in control, and more effective in your work as a therapist, you’re in the right place.

episode Same Highway, New Sign: The Cost of Inaction. cover

Same Highway, New Sign: The Cost of Inaction.

While clearing out drawers for a renovation, I found an old journal entry from 2021, written back when I was still a clinician describing compassion fatigue and a caseload with no room left for me. I thought the answer was simple. Build my own business, get the flexibility, control my own cash flow. It was not that simple. I built the business and ended up on the exact same highway, just with a new sign on it, still carrying everything in my head. In this episode I walk through what actually changed things. The cognitive lens that has let me build a multi six figure clinic, bill 10 to 15 hours a week, and still clock off for dance parties with my daughter. I am teaching exactly how I did it in my masterclass on the 24th of June at 12:30pm AEST, recorded for replay if you cannot make it live.  Link to Masterclass: www.imogenot.com.au/masterclass [http://www.imogenot.com.au/masterclass] Sign up to my newsletter [https://www.imogenot.com.au/newsletter]. Why Community Therapists Wake Up Exhausted Before Work Even Starts And What To Do About It

Children are finally in bed. You land on the couch, pick up your phone, and start scrolling to avoid how tired you feel. You tell yourself this is rest. The truth is you have not rested at all. You are just adding more cars to an already full highway. In this episode I share the version of myself from twelve months ago, the doom scroll that ran all the way through my evenings, and the snowball that carried my overload from the couch, into my workday, into daycare pickup, and back to bedtime again. I unpack why avoidance rest leaves your executive function running on empty, why that is the exact capacity you need to write the strong report, regulate in the room, and hold the grief that comes with changing independence, and the one shift that actually opens up the lanes on your highway. If you are telling yourself you are too busy to rest properly, you were just too busy doing the wrong rest. My free masterclass, How I Built a Multi Six Figure OT Practice Without Sacrificing My Weekends or My Sanity, is on the 24th of June at 12pm AEST. episode Finally, Words for What You're Feeling: Your Brain Is a Highway and There's a Traffic Jam cover

Finally, Words for What You're Feeling: Your Brain Is a Highway and There's a Traffic Jam

If you have ever felt completely maxed out but couldn't quite explain why, this episode is for you. In Episode 10, Imogen introduces the Traffic Jam Analogy — a framework she developed through clinical work with a client with an acquired brain injury and has since used with therapists, support coordinators, mentees, and parents. Your brain is a highway. Your thoughts are vehicles. And when you are running too many trucks, hitting too many potholes, or navigating roadworks, the traffic banks up. This episode breaks down each element of the analogy — from government vehicles to lane openers — and applies it to clients with complex disability presentations, community therapists carrying full caseloads, and honestly, anyone whose brain has to think. Which is everyone. DM Imogen "Traffic Jam Workbook" on Instagram to map your own highway. Sign up to my newsletter [https://www.imogenot.com.au/newsletter]. episode The Waiting Trap: Why There's No Perfect Week to Fix Your Cognitive Load cover

The Waiting Trap: Why There's No Perfect Week to Fix Your Cognitive Load

You're waiting for the renovation to finish. For referrals to ease up. For a week that finally feels calm enough to sit down and sort it all out. Sound familiar? In this episode, Imogen names the waiting trap for what it is — and why that perfect week isn't coming. The paradox of cognitive load is that getting on top of it requires adding to your plate before you can reduce it. And that's exactly where most therapists get stuck. Imogen draws on the framework you already use in clinical practice — assessment before intervention — to reframe why downloading the latest app isn't action, it's procrastination in disguise. Just like scripting a wheelchair without a mat eval, jumping from problem to solution skips the most important step. In this episode: * Why your cognitive load won't reduce if you don't take action now, not when things settle * The marketing trap that keeps you downloading, setting up, and abandoning tools on repeat * What productive action actually looks like (hint: it starts with assessment, not an app store) * Small, specific starting points you can action this week Link to coaching: www.imogenot.com.au/cognitivecapacitycoaching [httttp://www.imogenot.com.au/cognitivecapacitycoaching] Sign up to my newsletter [https://www.imogenot.com.au/newsletter]. episode The System Audit Before the Real Audit: NDIS Registration Through a Functional Cognition Lens cover

The System Audit Before the Real Audit: NDIS Registration Through a Functional Cognition Lens

If you're a clinic owner sitting on the fence about NDIS registration, this episode is going to reframe the whole thing for you. Getting registered isn't a compliance exercise — it's a systems assessment. And as OTs, systems assessment is literally what we do. Imogen is currently going through the registration process herself and shares what she didn't see coming: why having great policies isn't enough, why the audit is really asking whether your clinic can function without you holding it all together, and how getting on top of your cognitive load and getting NDIS compliant are — almost exactly — the same project. Including real examples from her own audit prep: Splose, Canyou, and the systems that actually made the difference. Sign up to my newsletter [https://www.imogenot.com.au/newsletter].
