episode Leading through Change, Saying No, and Giving Yourself Grace with Melissa Lopez cover

Leading through Change, Saying No, and Giving Yourself Grace with Melissa Lopez

Melissa Lopez is the CEO of Onyx Offsites & Trainings, based in San Diego, California. She previously worked in marketing and advertising, even running her own agency, but began working with Onyx in February 2020, right before our working world mostly went remote, and the programs her team had worked so hard to create were largely cancelled. We talk about how Melissa navigated the challenge and change with her team and where she thinks the future work environment is headed. Melissa gives us insight into how she sets her weekly priorities with her family and for her workweek. She shares just how hard it is for her to say "no" and offers some practical advice to us all on how to give yourself grace, and do what's right for you. TOPICS EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE: How Melissa led her team through massive change [ 4:17 ] The benefits of remote/hybrid work for business [ 12:50 ] Employees now have the upper hand [ 17:30 ] How Melissa schedules her priorities [ 19:45 ] Unique pressures on working parents [ 27:41 ] The challenge of saying "no" [ 31:53 ]   Melissa's Quotable: This new corporate normal is really going to allow people and employers to be more selective.    I was an otherwise intelligent woman except for the fact that I allowed myself for too many years in my early career to second guess and doubt myself, and I undermined my own strengths and capabilities.    ==========   Resources: * SCRUM: The Art of Doing Twice as Much in Half the Time [https://www.amazon.ca/Scrum-Doing-Twice-Work-Half/dp/038534645X/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=scrum&qid=1632101982&sr=8-1] * The Five Love Languages [https://www.amazon.ca/Love-Languages-Updated-Gary-Chapman/dp/080241270X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2D3LA2J49JZUP&dchild=1&keywords=the+five+love+languages&qid=1632101943&sprefix=the+five+love,aps,176&sr=8-1]   ==========   Connect with Melissa: * Website: https://www.onyxteams.com/ [https://www.onyxteams.com/]  * LinkedIn: @MelissaJaycoxLopez [https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissajaycoxlopez/]   ==========   Connect with Kattie: * Online: www.kattiethorndyke.com [http://www.kattiethorndyke.com] * Instagram: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.instagram.com/kattiethorndyke/] * LinkedIn: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.linkedin.com/in/kattie-thorndyke/]

An Update, an Overview of Issues, and an Invitation to You

Women are facing a lot right now. It's not a simple conversation. Work is complicated by the pandemic. Childcare is falling largely on our shoulders. But our voices are not being heard. It's been a couple of months since we last chatted, so grab a cup of tea, and let's get into how I'm doing, how we are all doing as a collective, and where I want this conversation to go in the coming months. It's time we stopped giving so much attention to the extremes and instead focused on where we are right now, the daily struggles, the feminist issues, and how we can come together to talk about what matters. TOPICS EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE: My struggle right now as an introvert [ 1:10 ] Honestly, how things are with me right now [ 2:16 ] What a typical day looks like [ 4:58 ] The issues facing women right now are endless [ 6:48 ] The physical/medical challenges [ 8:00 ] What reignited my passion this week [ 10:05 ] What I'm hoping we can start discussing [ 12:30 ]   Kattie's Quotable: There is very little support in place if we really get to the root of what's going on.   ==========   Connect with Kattie: * Online: www.kattiethorndyke.com [http://www.kattiethorndyke.com] * Instagram: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.instagram.com/kattiethorndyke/] * LinkedIn: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.linkedin.com/in/kattie-thorndyke/]

episode Choosing NOT To Do It All with Kelly Allen cover

Choosing NOT To Do It All with Kelly Allen

Kelly is a copywriter, who works with female entrepreneurs to help them be seen and heard. Her own business, Wordified, was born after spending years in corporate marketing and advertising, and feeling like her creativity was being stifled. She now works part-time in marketing and spends the remainder of her time on her own business and with her family. We talk about the lucrative nature of certain industries, the impracticality of unpaid internships and how important it is to work in an environment that is good for your mental health. Identities wrapped up in job titles and how we each view success are also explored in this episode. Kelly shares with us the pressures placed on mothers to do it all, and how we're trying to cram too much in between the ages of 20 and 40, which is just making us stressed out.    TOPICS EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE: Working for free wasn't for Kelly [ 2:37 ] Corporate life stifling creativity [ 4:32 ] The craziness of desirable industries [ 7:37 ] Having an identity intimately linked to your career [ 12:02 ] How Kelly nurtured her creativity back [ 16:52 ] Balancing corporate life, entrepreneurship and motherhood [ 21:01 ] It's ok to say no to opportunities [ 26:59 ] Constant distractions in the age of smartphones [ 32:57 ] Over-scheduled and learning to let go [ 37:37 ]   Kelly's Quotable: We're all going to be working for a long time. You can have three, four, five careers in that time.   I was an otherwise intelligent woman except for the fact that I cannot read graphs or charts.    ========== Connect with Kelly: * Website: wordified.com.au [http://wordified.com.au] * Instagram: @_wordified [https://www.instagram.com/_wordified/] ========== Connect with Kattie: * Online: www.kattiethorndyke.com [http://www.kattiethorndyke.com] * Instagram: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.instagram.com/kattiethorndyke/]

episode Putting Yourself Out There on Instagram with Jamie Dickson cover

Putting Yourself Out There on Instagram with Jamie Dickson

Jamie is a content writer and Instagram consultant for parenting and family-focused businesses. Jamie knew she always wanted to be a writer, so she studied journalism and then went on to work as an editor for local magazines and newspapers. After having her two sons, Jamie started freelancing on small projects and was then asked to be the Director of Communications for a behavioural health facility, which was a dream job, but the structure of the 9 to 5 was no longer for her. Jamie and I discuss what it means to put yourself out there on Instagram as a business owner, and how we learned to get past the fear of judgement from other people. Jamie also shares how she was able to get past decision fatigue and worry around new job opportunities, by reminding herself she always has a choice and can always leave. We also get into the things we miss about the 9 to 5 grind and the things that we were happy to see go. TOPICS EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE: Journalistic roots from a very young age [ 1:22 ] Staying home with her kids eventually led to freelancing [ 4:08 ] Putting herself out there on Instagram was step one [ 6:20 ] Where to find new business opportunities [ 7:34 ]  Instagram is no longer the highlight reel [ 10:58 ] Giving yourself an out in a new job [ 19:43 ] The biggest draws and misconceptions to working for yourself [ 28:44 ] Things we miss about the 9 to 5 [ 32:00 ]   Jamie's Quotable: Keep that one ideal client or person in mind when you show up on Instagram, and forget about everyone else.    I was an otherwise intelligent woman except for the fact that I was my own worst enemy. I let my lack of confidence really slow me down.    ========== Connect with Jamie: * Instagram: @jamie_c_dickson [https://www.instagram.com/jamie_c_dickson/] ========== Connect with Kattie: * Online: www.kattiethorndyke.com [http://www.kattiethorndyke.com] * Instagram: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.instagram.com/kattiethorndyke/] * LinkedIn: @kattiethorndyke [https://www.linkedin.com/in/kattie-thorndyke/]
