Nee, een blauwe envelop. En niet van de Belastingdienst. If only it were such a party. No, a blue envelope. And not from the Tax Authorities. Maarten: Oh nee. Een boete? Oh no. A fine? Lisa: Jaaaa, een boete! Voor te hard rijden. Ik ben zo boos! Yesss, a fine! For speeding. I'm so angry! Maarten: Echt? Waar dan? Je rijdt toch meestal niet zo hard? Really? Where then? You usually don't drive that fast, do you? Lisa: Nou, blijkbaar wel! Het was op de A2, ergens bij Utrecht. Zo'n stomme flitspaal. Well, apparently I do! It was on the A2, somewhere near Utrecht. Such a stupid speed camera. Maarten: Ja, daar staan er inderdaad een paar. Was het een trajectcontrole? Yes, there are indeed a few there. Was it an average speed check? Lisa: Nee, gewoon één zo'n paal. Ik zag hem totaal niet. En het was niet eens tijdens de spits, het was juist rustig. Daarom reed ik misschien wat harder. No, just one of those cameras. I didn't see it at all. And it wasn't even during rush hour, it was actually quiet. That's why I might have driven a bit faster. Maarten: Ja, precies. Dat is verraderlijk. Ik gebruik daarom altijd de ANWB Onderweg app, die waarschuwt voor flitspalen. Yes, exactly. That's treacherous. That's why I always use the ANWB Onderweg app, which warns about speed cameras. How much is a fine like that these days anyway? Maarten: Dat hangt ervan af hoe hard je ging. Maar het is nooit goedkoop. Bovendien kan het invloed hebben op je autoverzekering als je het heel bont maakt, al is dat bij een kleine boete niet zo. That depends on how fast you were going. But it's never cheap. Moreover, it can affect your car insurance if you really push it, although that's not the case with a small fine. Lisa: Nou ja, het was gelukkig niet extreem. Maar toch. Ik baal er gewoon van. Tegenwoordig probeer ik op de snelweg gewoon de cruise control aan te zetten. Dat is veel relaxter. That's actually not so bad then. I've had one too. Nowadays, I just try to turn on cruise control on the highway. That's much more relaxing. Lisa: Ja, dat is waar. Maar in de stad heb je daar niks aan. Daar is het sowieso een drama met autorijden. Yes, that's true. But in the city, that's no use. Driving there is a nightmare anyway. Maarten: Zeker. Ik pak eigenlijk altijd de fiets in Utrecht. Zelfs als ik naar de andere kant van de stad moet, ben ik met de fiets vaak sneller dan met de auto, vooral tijdens de spits. Definitely. I actually always take the bike in Utrecht. Even if I have to go to the other side of the city, I'm often faster by bike than by car, especially during rush hour. Lisa: Eens. Al die stoplichten, en dan heb je ook nog de kans op een file. Het is niet alleen hulp met de baby, maar ook controle voor de moeder. En ze geven tips over de opvoeding en voeding. Heel waardevol. Exactly. It's not just help with the baby, but also a check-up for the mother. And they give tips on upbringing and feeding. Very valuable. Lisa: Zeker. Maar oh wacht, het volgende 'probleem' is alweer in zicht: de kinderopvang. Ze vertelde dat de wachtlijsten enorm zijn. Definitely. But oh wait, the next 'problem' is already in sight: childcare. Maarten: Hm, ja, die hebben allebei voor- en nadelen. Een kinderdagverblijf, of een crèche, is vaak groter, met meer kindjes om mee te spelen. Goed voor de socialisatie. Hm, yes, they both have pros and cons. A daycare center, or a crèche, is often larger, with more children to play with. Good for socialization. Lisa: En een gastouder is dan meer huiselijk, denk ik? Kleinschaliger? And a childminder is more homely, I guess? Smaller-scale? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Het is bij iemand thuis, met een kleinere groep. Soms is dat rustiger voor een baby. Het is heel persoonlijk wat je fijner vindt. Essentially, yes. It's at someone's home, with a smaller group. Sometimes that's calmer for a baby. It's very personal what you prefer. Lisa: En dan heb je later nog de BSO, de buitenschoolse opvang. Daar weet jij natuurlijk alles van. And then later you have the BSO, the after-school care. You know all about that, of course. Maarten: Nou ja, alles... Ik zie wel dat het voor werkende ouders onmisbaar is. De kinderen komen na schooltijd bij ons en kunnen daar spelen tot hun ouders klaar zijn met werken. Well, everything... I do see that it's indispensable for working parents. The children come to us after school and can play there until their parents are finished with work. Lisa: Het is wel een hele organisatie. Sanne en haar vriend zijn nu al aan het kijken hoe ze dat gaan doen met parttime werken. It's quite an organization. Sanne and her partner are already looking into how they'll manage that with part-time work. Maarten: Dat is de standaard puzzel. Gelukkig hebben we in Nederland relatief goede regelingen, zoals het ouderschapsverlof. That's the standard puzzle. Fortunately, in the Netherlands, we have relatively good arrangements, such as parental leave. Lisa: Ja, en de kinderopvangtoeslag. Al hoor ik daar ook weleens horrorverhalen over. Very clear. Maarten: Ja precies. Yes, exactly. Lisa: En dan heb je het `kinderdagverblijf` voor de kleintjes, en een `gastouder` is het alternatief. En de `BSO` is dus echt voor na schooltijd. And then you have the `daycare center` for the little ones, and a `childminder` is the alternative. And the `BSO` (after-school care) is really for after school hours. Maarten: Klopt. Buitenschoolse opvang. En het `consultatiebureau` is voor de medische controles. Je hebt het helemaal door. That's right. After-school care. I was just scrolling through old photos and I found one of... oh wait, Queen's Day! Remember? When it was still on April 30th. Maarten: Oh ja, Koninginnedag. Dat voelt echt als een eeuwigheid geleden. Ik herinner me vooral de enorme drukte in de stad. Eigenlijk net als Koningsdag nu. Oh yes, Queen's Day. That really feels like an eternity ago. I mainly remember the enormous crowds in the city. Actually, just like King's Day now. Lisa: Ja precies! Maar de sfeer is altijd zo goed. Dat is toch wel echt een uniek Nederlands ding, hè? Yes, exactly! But the atmosphere is always so good. That really is a unique Dutch thing, isn't it? Maarten: Zeker. De hele stad die oranje kleurt en overal die vrijmarkt. Dat vind ik wel het leukste onderdeel. Definitely. The whole city turning orange and the flea market everywhere. I think that's the best part. Lisa: Ja, de vrijmarkt! Ik hou ervan om tussen al die kraampjes te snuffelen. Mensen verkopen de meest bizarre dingen. Ik heb ooit een set van tien eierdoppen gekocht. Yes, the flea market! I love browsing through all those stalls. People sell the most bizarre things. I once bought a set of ten egg cups. Maarten: Tien eierdoppen? Wat moet je daarmee? Ten egg cups? What do you need those for? Lisa: Geen idee, ik heb ze nog steeds. Ze waren gewoon zo... grappig. Maar naast de vrijmarkt zijn er in Rotterdam ook altijd grote podia met bekende artiesten. Dat is meer een echt festival. No idea, I still have them. They were just so... funny. But besides the flea market, there are always big stages with famous artists in Rotterdam. That's more of a real festival. Maarten: Ja, dat is in Utrecht minder, hier is het meer op de grachten met de bootjes. Dat is ook een hele belevenis. Maar als je het over echte festivals hebt, dan denk ik toch meteen aan Lowlands. Yes, that's less so in Utrecht, here it's more on the canals with the boats. That's also quite an experience. But when you talk about real festivals, I immediately think of Lowlands. Lisa: Oh, Lowlands! Ja, daar moeten we echt weer eens heen. Dat enorme terrein, de tentjes overal, de sfeer... Dat is toch anders dan een stadsfeest. Oh, Lowlands! Yes, we really have to go there again sometime. That enormous site, the tents everywhere, the atmosphere... That's different from a city party. Maarten: Absoluut. De line-up is daar ook altijd zo divers. Van grote internationale namen tot kleine, onbekende bandjes op een klein podium. Absolutely. The line-up there is always so diverse too. From big international names to small, unknown bands on a small stage. Lisa: Echt hè. Maar de kaartjes zijn altijd zo snel uitverkocht. We moeten er volgend jaar echt vroeg bij zijn. Denk je dat we tegen februari onze tickets al gekocht zullen hebben? Right? But the tickets always sell out so fast. We really have to be early next year. Do you think we will have bought our tickets by February? Maarten: Dat hoop ik wel, want ik denk dat het festival tegen maart al lang en breed uitverkocht zal zijn. Het is elk jaar hetzelfde liedje. I hope so, because I think the festival will be long sold out by March. It's the same story every year. Lisa: Dat is waar. Oh wacht, weet je nog dat jaar dat het zo stormde? Toen hebben ze een deel van het programma moeten afgelasten. Zo zonde. That's true. Oh wait, do you remember that year it was so stormy? They had to cancel part of the program then. Such a shame. Maarten: Ja, dat was heftig. Dan zie je ook hoeveel erbij komt kijken. De beveiliging moet dan extra alert zijn en de organisatie moet snel beslissingen nemen. Yes, that was intense. Then you also see how much is involved. Security has to be extra alert and the organization has to make quick decisions. Lisa: Precies. Je denkt er niet over na, maar voor zo'n groot evenement is vast een hele stapel vergunningen nodig. Exactly. You don't think about it, but for such a big event, a whole stack of permits is probably needed. Maarten: Nou en of. Voor elk podium, voor elke eetkraam, voor het geluidsniveau... alles is geregeld. Als leraar denk ik dan: hopelijk zullen ze aan het eind van de dag al het afval netjes opgeruimd hebben. You bet. For every stage, for every food stall, for the noise level... everything is regulated. As a teacher, I then think: hopefully they will have neatly cleaned up all the waste by the end of the day. Lisa: Haha, typisch jij. Maar gelijk heb je. De opkomst is elk jaar weer gigantisch, dus dat is een flinke klus. Haha, typical you. But you're right. The turnout is gigantic every year, so that's a big job. Maarten: Ja, 'opkomst' is eigenlijk een mooi woord. Het klinkt zo formeel, maar het beschrijft perfect die enorme mensenmassa die op een evenement afkomt. Yes, 'opkomst' (turnout) is actually a nice word. It sounds so formal, but it perfectly describes that enormous crowd of people that comes to an event. Lisa: Echt hè? En die mensen komen allemaal voor de sfeer, de artiesten en natuurlijk de kraampjes. Of het nu een vrijmarkt is of een foodtruckfestival. Right? And all those people come for the atmosphere, the artists and, of course, the stalls. Whether it's a flea market or a food truck festival. Maarten: Precies. 'Vrijmarkt' is ook zo'n typisch Nederlands woord. Een markt waar iedereen vrij is om te verkopen. Heel simpel eigenlijk. Exactly. 'Vrijmarkt' (flea market) is also such a typical Dutch word. A market where everyone is free to sell. Very simple, actually. Lisa: Ja, precies. En dat is het leuke eraan. Oh, ik krijg nu helemaal zin in volgend jaar Koningsdag. Dan zal ik mijn tien eierdoppen verkocht hebben! Yes, exactly. And that's the fun part about it. Oh, I'm really looking forward to next year's King's Day now. Then I will have sold my ten egg cups! Supermooi, maar ook zó plat. Ik voelde me net een postzegel op een biljartlaken. Yeah, great! I went cycling yesterday. I had a friend map out a route through the Green Heart. Super beautiful, but also so flat. I felt like a postage stamp on a billiard table. Maarten: Haha, ja, dat is het Nederlandse landschap. Welkom in de polder. Haha, yeah, that's the Dutch landscape. Welcome to the polder. Lisa: Precies! Ik moest er meteen aan denken, hoe bijzonder dat eigenlijk is. Exactly! It immediately made me think how special that actually is. Maarten: Ja, een heel groot deel van West-Nederland is eigenlijk gewoon polder. Land dat we van het water hebben gewonnen. Yes, a very large part of West-Netherlands is actually just polder. Land that we've reclaimed from the water. Lisa: Echt hè. In Rotterdam voel je dat ook constant. De stad ligt voor een groot deel onder de zeespiegel. Dat is toch bizar? Right? In Rotterdam, you feel that constantly too. A large part of the city lies below sea level. Isn't that bizarre? Maarten: Zeker. Het is een heel ander gevoel dan in Amsterdam, vind ik. Daar heb je de grachten, maar het voelt meer als een historische stad die met water leeft, niet tégen water vecht. Definitely. It's a very different feeling than in Amsterdam, I think. There you have the canals, but it feels more like a historical city that lives with water, not fighting against water. Lisa: Ja, Amsterdam is gezellig en oud. Rotterdam is... nou ja, die is gebouwd op werk en water. Alles is groter, de haven, de rivier. Ze hebben de hele stad opnieuw moeten aanleggen na de oorlog. Yes, Amsterdam is cozy and old. Rotterdam is... well, it's built on work and water. Everything is bigger, the port, the river. They had to rebuild the entire city after the war. Maarten: Ja, precies. En dat hele proces van droogleggen is fascinerend. Eerst een dijk eromheen bouwen, en dan al het water eruit pompen. Yes, exactly. And that whole process of land reclamation is fascinating. First building a dike around it, and then pumping all the water out. Lisa: Oh wacht, dat droogleggen, dat is echt een kunst. Mijn opa vertelde daar wel eens over. Ze deden dat vroeger met molens. Nu met enorme gemalen. Oh wait, that land reclamation, that's truly an art. My grandpa used to talk about it. They used windmills for that back then. Now with enormous pumping stations. Maarten: Klopt. Ons hele waterbeheer is wereldberoemd. Zonder die dijken en pompen zou de helft van het land gewoon onder water staan. That's right. Our entire water management is world-famous. Without those dikes and pumps, half the country would simply be underwater. Lisa: Ja, lekker belangrijk! Dan zou ik nu vanuit mijn huis in Utrecht naar jou moeten zwemmen. Gaat lekker dan. Yeah, super important! Then I'd have to swim from my house in Utrecht to yours now. That would be great then. Maarten: Nou ja, Utrecht ligt gelukkig wat hoger. Maar het idee is eng.
