Who Are We Called to Be? Redeemer at an Existential Reflection Point

Redeemer stands at an existential reflection point. Drawing on Matthew’s Gospel, this sermon explores identity, purpose, community, and the call to love new life into being—even amid uncertainty and change. Why do we exist as a church, and what is God calling us tobecome? In this sermon, we explore Redeemer’s “existential reflection point,” asking who we are at our core, what our purpose is, and how Matthew’s Gospel guides us through seasons of uncertainty. From tunics and tradition to covenantidentity, shunned people, mission, and the Kingdom of Heaven, this message invites us to join God in loving new life into being. This sermon was preached at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, Washington, on the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 6A), June 14, 2026, by Mr. Earl Beede. All are welcome to fully participate at Episcopal Church ofthe Redeemer: ✅All races.✅All religions.✅All countries of origin.✅All sexual orientations, including LGBTQ+.✅All genders. The Spirit Who Will Not Be Contained

A reflection on Pentecost, creation, and the Spirit who refuses to stay in the places we try to put God. Pentecost isn’t paperwork, timelines, or tidy theology. It’s the wild, uncontainable Spirit who shows up in tents, in camps, in breath, in creation, and in every place God chooses to be. This message explores how Scripture reveals a Spirit who is life, renewal, new creation, and the fire that forms God’s people—not once, but continually. 1 — Pentecost begins in our confusion. The Spirit refuses to fit the timelines we try to give God. 2 — We want clarity; God offers breath. Light‑bulb certainty or resurrected air — we long to choose. 3 — But the Spirit has never stayed where we put God. “The Spirit showed up in the camp.” 4 — The tent cannot contain the Holy. God moves where God wills, not where we designate. 5 — Breath and Spirit are the same word. “You send forth your Spirit and they are created.” 6 — Life itself is the Spirit’s signature. Where life rises, God is already moving. 7 — Jesus breathes new creation into us. “He breathed on them and said… Receive the Holy Spirit.” 8 — Pentecost is fire that forms a people. Not by law alone, but by love lived out. 9 — The Spirit pours onto all flesh. Not the worthy — the willing. 10 — Mystery replaces the certainty we once demanded. We grow into a faith wide enough for gray. 11 — The Spirit bursts forth whenever we align with love. Life multiplies in the giving. 12 — The Spirit is already here. We simply open our hearts to where God is. Mr. Earl Beede preached this sermon on the Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday (Year A), May 24, 2026, at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, Washington.
