You're listening to the NACK Podcast, a digital Journal magazine. Back in 1989, an exciting telefilm came on television titled A Mother's Courage: The Mary Thomas Story. It was a two part episode. The movie was about the mother of basketball star Isiah Thomas. Alfred Woodard played as Mary Thomas. The right actress was picked to play as Mary Thomas. Alfred Woodard was able to act out just how strong Mary Thomas was in raising her children. She fought to keep her family together and her sons out of trouble though they lived around poverty, drugs, and crime. Mary stood up to a gang leader played by Harry Lenox at a school dance. I could feel Alfre Woodard’s acting. Getting lost in the film, it seemed like Alfre was actually Mary Thomas. She made you forget that she was not Mary Thomas as you got lost in the story of the film. Mary Thomas used a shotgun to keep gang members away from her family. In the movie, she pointed a gun at the gang leader and said: Ain’t but one gang in this family and that’s the Thomas Gang. Michael Thomas was played by Leon from the Five Hearbearts. Garland Spenser played Isiah Thomas in middle school. Larry O. Williams Jr. played Isiah Thomas in high school. It was an awesome story and film. Films based on true stories, if made right, are the best. And if it’s a telefilm, it makes me watch television even more. Commentary

Story by: Gail Nobles You ever find yourself, late at night, maybe cruising down the boulevard with the radio on low, and a song comes on that just… I mean, it hits you right in the rhythm section, a real gone melody with a beat you can really dance to. But then you find out... it never was a hit. It never even cracked the Top 40. It got lost in the shuffle, a forgotten 45 in a discount bin. You’ve just stumbled upon what we in the biz call "The Untapped Groove." And let me tell you, it happens more than you think! Back in the early days of this rock 'n' roll revolution, the air was electric! But the music industry, well, it was a tough town. You could have the most solid gold song, but if your record label didn't get behind you with a big push—getting the music into the jukeboxes, sweet-talking the disc jockeys, plastering your name in lights—you could get lost in the static. It wasn't just about talent; it was about luck, timing, and having a big machine behind you. And don't even get me started on the groups themselves! A group cuts one wild, crazy record that starts gettin' some heat... and then *poof*! They split up. Maybe the lead singer gets drafted, the guitar player's old lady wants him to get a "real job," or they just have a rumble over who gets the songwriting credit. It happened all the time in the fifties and sixties! They cut their career short before they could even build up a full catalog of killers. Then there's the scene over in the UK, man! Man, oh, man! They've got some crazy, frantic sounds over there! Groups that are bigger than Elvis in Liverpool or Manchester, packing the dance halls night after night. But sometimes, that sound just doesn't make the hop across the big pond. It gets lost at sea. It's a crazy world! So the next time you're digging through your big stack of records and you find one of those forgotten gems, don't you dare feel sorry for it. These scams can lead to huge losses and also hurt trust between friends and with banks or other businesses. The rising cost of living makes things even harder. Many Americans are dealing with higher bills and surprise expenses that add to their stress. People often have to handle costs they can't control, like increased utility bills or medical expenses. This financial pressure can make people feel hopeless, leading them to make desperate choices to find stability. Additionally, society often celebrates greed and wealth, which can make things worse. The media shows luxurious lifestyles that can pressure people to act unethically or illegally to keep up. When money becomes the main goal, it can change what people consider right or wrong, which ties back to the powerful message in The O'Jays' song., Love of Money. To address these issues, society needs to focus on teaching people about money and provide support for those affected by financial crimes. This means educating people about scams, promoting good financial habits, and encouraging open discussions about money and its effects on our lives.
