Skeleton's In Their Closet: J&J Pt1

Hello Poison Friends! We are covering some long standing pharmaceutical companies and their deep dark secrets over the years, starting here with Johnson & Johnson. This company has been around for generations now, and they have garnered a reputation for their gentleness and trustworthiness--mainly through the sales of baby products and their marketing of such. However, the company was originally started in 1886, by three brothers looking to make a difference in the world with their medicated plasters and antiseptic bandages. Leadership of the company would pass out of the family only a few generations later, under some unfortunate circumstances. While they still have the same credo on their website, values shown in their actions, or lack thereof, changed entirely. In this part, we are looking at their history and the first of many scandals that stretched for decades until new science and methods of testing for toxic substances caught up with them. Unfortunately, once it was discovered that their baby powders (and other talc products) were contaminated with a cancer causing toxin, thousands of women had become ill and died from past exposure to them. The Kellogg Bros: Flaky Cereal, Flaky Medicine, and Toxic Relations

**Erin is out this week for some family time and I was also out of town, so here is a fun episode from the Patreon Bonus vault! Our usual schedule of bi weekly episodes will be back in play beginning next weekend with a new episode! We know the Kellogg name for their cereal's (They'rrrrrreeee Great!) and other such foods. However, the men behind the brand were a a pair of interesting brothers who honestly sucked at being brothers. Now in William Kellogg's defense, Dr. John Kellogg was an arrogant ass of a man who took credit for everything he could, invented some wild wellness contraptions, and who ended up becoming a huge supporter of eugenics...when he wasn't trying to cure masturbation or constipation (two "evils" he was strangely obsessed with). I don't mean to be so biased against Dr. Kellogg--who by the way, lost the rights to the family name for his food company to his brother, William--but I can't stand a racist, eugenicist jerk face so here we are. Do not fear, fans of Kellogg cereals, because technically it was his brother who made the Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies we know today (Dr. John could never with his restrictive ways). Dr. John Kellogg ran a popular sanitarium that provided some interesting treatments to some famous people before he ventured into foods. He taught that a certain lifestyle could cure all your ails, which, my friends, is a red flag when it comes to a wellness scam, just saying. Were all of his health and wellness ideas and practices wrong? No, but I will definitely be covering the wackiest ones. Sir Isaac Newton (From Bonus Eps)

Hello Poison Friends! This week I am posting an older Bonus episode from our Patreon while Erin is out of town and Mother's Day weekend pulls us away from the desk and microphones. We will have a new episode for you next weekend, though, and from there we'll continue our every other week status! Sir Isaac Newton was big into alchemy and likely suffered from heavy metal poisoning because of it. I mean, God forbid the man acquires a hobby, right? Well, according to the Church of England (and his Anglican upbringing) it was forbidden. Technically, it was also banned to prevent the value of currency becoming moot as alchemy's main goals were to turn any metal to gold and to create the Philosopher's Stone--Yes, yes, we do mention Nicolas Flamel, because while he did not actually know any Dumbledores, he was real...or at least a figure written about. He had few friends and many rivals. Newton has been called a genius of geniuses by many and still influences scientists today. Most of us know his Laws of Motion and his work explaining gravity and inventing Calculus. He was also known to be socially difficult, prone to angry outbursts, was fiercely competitive (but also insecure), and did not take criticism well. He also would have been labeled a heretic by the church of his time (and who doesn't love a rebel like that?). His work in alchemy led to his exposure to some toxic heavy metals and the effects can be seen in his letters with friends and through witnesses who knew him best.
