Hello Poison Friends! Erin and I are taking a break from our breakdown of Johnson & Johnson's dark deeds, this week. Why? So we can celebrate America's Independence with stories of Founding Fathers and intrepid explorers of the nation and their encounters with poison. We are going a bit deeper into the medicinal chaos of Dr. Benjamin Rush, the only doctor to sign the Declaration of Independence. A great follower and teacher of "heroic medicine," he was a believer in excessive bloodletting, administering purgatives, and using blistering agents to make the ailing (literally) sweat it out. He also taught Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition, all of his...remedies, should his team need them on the journey. Speaking of Meriwether Lewis, his death only 3 years after their return was full of suspicious details and conspiracy. Finally, we need to discuss the death of George Wythe, member of the constitutional convention, friend and mentor to Thomas Jefferson, lawyer, professor, and all around good guy (especially for the time period). Johnson & Johnson Pt. 2: Lawsuits and Lethal Lies

Hey Hey Poison Friends! We are bringing you part 2 of our look into Johnson & Johnson, and the drama is only escalating. We are discussing the expensive end to their use of talc in baby powders as well as the damage that it did to numerous women and likely others exposed to it. J&J apparently learned nothing from this, however. When people began dying of liver failure after taking too much Tylenol (acetaminophen) or because they had been moderate drinkers before taking it, they did their best to hide the facts from the public. When the FDA asked them to put a warning on Tylenol for its possible effects on the liver, they fought back for years. They made hundreds of millions of dollars on Tylenol, even though it was over the counter, and it was at one point the highest cause of liver failure in the US and in Britain. Then there was the infant's vs children's versions. In the midst of all of this, we need to look into their history of wooing doctors and politicians into their pockets as well as how their agenda for more money has led to bankruptcies and deaths across America for decades. Skeleton's In Their Closet: J&J Pt1

Hello Poison Friends! We are covering some long standing pharmaceutical companies and their deep dark secrets over the years, starting here with Johnson & Johnson. This company has been around for generations now, and they have garnered a reputation for their gentleness and trustworthiness--mainly through the sales of baby products and their marketing of such. However, the company was originally started in 1886, by three brothers looking to make a difference in the world with their medicated plasters and antiseptic bandages. Leadership of the company would pass out of the family only a few generations later, under some unfortunate circumstances. While they still have the same credo on their website, values shown in their actions, or lack thereof, changed entirely. In this part, we are looking at their history and the first of many scandals that stretched for decades until new science and methods of testing for toxic substances caught up with them. Unfortunately, once it was discovered that their baby powders (and other talc products) were contaminated with a cancer causing toxin, thousands of women had become ill and died from past exposure to them. The Kellogg Bros: Flaky Cereal, Flaky Medicine, and Toxic Relations

**Erin is out this week for some family time and I was also out of town, so here is a fun episode from the Patreon Bonus vault! However, the men behind the brand were a a pair of interesting brothers who honestly sucked at being brothers. Now in William Kellogg's defense, Dr. John Kellogg was an arrogant ass of a man who took credit for everything he could, invented some wild wellness contraptions, and who ended up becoming a huge supporter of eugenics...when he wasn't trying to cure masturbation or constipation (two "evils" he was strangely obsessed with). I don't mean to be so biased against Dr. Kellogg--who by the way, lost the rights to the family name for his food company to his brother, William--but I can't stand a racist, eugenicist jerk face so here we are. Do not fear, fans of Kellogg cereals, because technically it was his brother who made the Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies we know today (Dr. John could never with his restrictive ways). Dr. John Kellogg ran a popular sanitarium that provided some interesting treatments to some famous people before he ventured into foods. He taught that a certain lifestyle could cure all your ails, which, my friends, is a red flag when it comes to a wellness scam, just saying. Were all of his health and wellness ideas and practices wrong? No, but I will definitely be covering the wackiest ones. Hello Poison Friends! We have a collection of wild cases to share with you all this episode involving neighbors, roomies, and coworkers that have gone from angry to toxic...literally. Many of these are actually quite recent and investigations may still be ongoing, but arrests have been made and there is plenty of evidence proving their guilt.
