James Byrd Jr. saattaa olla monelle tuttu nimi. Hän oli 49-vuotias amerikkalainen mies, joka kuoli vuonna 1998 järkyttävän henkirikoksen uhrina Jasperin kaupungissa Teksasissa. James liftasi tuona kohtalokkaana iltana kyydin sellaisilta ihmisiltä, jotka olivat haaveilleet toisen ihmisen satuttamisesta ja jopa murhasta. Vuonna 2012 teksasilainen perheenisä laati murhasuunnitelman, jonka kohteena oli hänen oma keskimmäinen tyttärensä ja tämän lähipiiri. Viisi nuorta olivat kokoontuneet nuotion äärelle Gitchie Manitoun luonnonsuojelualueelle eräänä marraskuisena perjantaina vuonna 1973. He viettivät yhdessä rauhallista iltaa, jota yksi nuorista säesti kitaramusiikilla. Iltakymmenen aikaan ympäröivästä metsästä alkoi kuitenkin kuulua lähestyviä ääniä ja nuorten illanvietto keskeytyi.
