Cold Mourning Audiobook by Brenda Chapman

Title: Cold Mourning Subtitle: A Stonechild and Rouleau Mystery Author: Brenda Chapman Narrator: Michelle St. John Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 7 mins Language: English Release date: 11-30-17 Publisher: Dundurn Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals Publisher's Summary: Nominated for the 2015 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel When murder stalks a family over Christmas, Kala Stonechild trusts her intuition to get results. It's a week before Christmas when wealthy businessman Tom Underwood disappears into thin air - with more than enough people wanting him dead. New police recruit Kala Stonechild, who has left her northern Ontario detachment to join a specialized Ottawa crime unit, is tasked with returning Underwood home in time for the holidays. Stonechild, who is from a First Nations reserve, is a lone wolf who is used to surviving on her wits. Her new boss, Detective Jacques Rouleau, has his hands full controlling her, his team, and an investigation that keeps threatening to go off track. Old betrayals and complicated family relationships brutally collide when love turns to hate and murder stalks a family. Critic Reviews: (Cold Mourning maintains its low-key feel just long enough to sneak up on you with its grit and promise." (National Post) Members Reviews: Interesting characters Great characters, fascinating mystery with hard to solve murders. Takes place mostly in Ottowa, Canada. A native Canadian from the res,who is a young woman and a police officer with a dramatic past, is the main character (Stonechild). Rouleau is a veteran male police officer with an interesting past and a future that is a puzzle to him. These two make quite a team. I look forward to more stories about them. Compelling and well written police procedural This Canadian police procedural is well written, has interesting well-defined characters and a compelling plot. First Nations police officer Kala Stonechild moves to Ottowa to join a newly launched department headed by veteran Jacques Rouleau. A 2015 Arthur Ellis Finalist for Best Novel. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. great start to a series I really enjoyed this first mystery featuring Stonechild and Rouleau - nicely developed characters with interesting histories, likeable and easy to root for. Chapman's mystery is solid, the solution satisfying, and her descriptions of the Ottawa winter so vivid I could hear the crunch of snow as I read. Will definitely be back for more in this series. Recommended. Four Stars Really liked the tale, and the in depth knowledge of the culture Great Read I was immediately pulled into this story by the prologue as it focuses on two young girls as they battle a man who lured them into his vanâit piqued my interest and pulled me right into the story. Then the novel jumps ahead a decade or so, and we meet new characters. Although it is obvious that Kala Stonechild is one of the little girls from the prologue, using a different name, the text doesnât come out and say it, and so it keeps readers guessing. In fact, the novel actually keeps readers guessing throughout much of it, especially with the revelations that keep popping up in regards to Tomâs Underwoodâs murder, the main focus of the novel. Kala Stonechild is a hard character to get to know. She keeps herself closed off from everyone, including the reader, but sheâs a hard worker, quick on her feet, and sheâs admirable. I really enjoyed her aloofness, even though that meant I didnât really connect with her on the deeper level.

Ragged Lake Audiobook by Ron Corbett

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/287/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/287/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Ragged Lake Author: Ron Corbett Narrator: Graham Rowat Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 10-23-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals Publisher's Summary: As the history of a murdered family is pieced together, Detective Frank Yakabuski learns something criminal has been happening at Ragged Lake, with roots going back decades.... The debut in a pause-resisting trilogy from award-winning writer Ron Corbett. Gruesome murders, a northern secret, and a buried past While working one afternoon on the Northern Divide, a young tree-marker makes a grisly discovery: in a squatter's cabin near an old mill town, a family has been murdered. An army vet coming off a successful turn leading a task force that took down infamous biker criminals, Detective Frank Yakabuski arrives in Ragged Lake, a nearly abandoned village, to solve the family's murder. But no one is willing to talk. With a winter storm coming, Yakabuski sequesters the locals in a fishing lodge as he investigates the area with his two junior officers. Before long, he is fighting not only to solve the crime, but also to stay alive and protect the few innocents left living in the desolate woods. A richly atmospheric mystery with sweeping backdrops, explosive action, and memorable villains, Ragged Lake will keep you guessing - about the violent crime, the nature of family, and secret deeds done long ago on abandoned frontiers. Members Reviews: Agatha Christie meets Quentin Tarantino Det. Frank Yakabuski is a veteran and recently off a long undercover operation when he's called to a remote ghost town on the Northern Divide to investigate a grisly murder. The town of Ragged Lake never recovered from the mill closings. Just a few stalwarts remain. But a tree-marker is in the woods and discovers a reclusive family slaughtered in their ramshackle cabin. This Canadian noir combines a modern sensibility with the classic elements of the police procedural and whodunit -- the knowledgeable world-weary detective, his naive young colleagues, a brutal murder, the creepy villain and his scary henchman, more brutal murders. The writing is terrific, not the typical terse narrative but a story in the best sense of the word, relating the experiences and memories of Yakabuski and Lucy, the Cree woman found in the cabin, with unfolding events. Eventually all the suspects and cops are sequestered in the town's lodge as a big snow storm moves in. So classic. Tensions build. Then the REALLY bad guys arrive. Well written and thoughtful, this is the first work of fiction by this author and I look forward to the next. Too Violent, Too Many Digressions Frank âYakâ Yakabuski is a Senior Detective in the Springfield Regional Police in Canada. He is also a veteran of Canadian Special Forces that served in Bosnia. His station receives a call from the a fishing lodge near Ragged Lake and the North Divide that someone had found a dead family, probably murdered, in their cabin several miles away. The Northern Divide runs from the entrance to Hudson Bay southwest to Lake Superior. Once the paper mills had shut down a few years earlier, there are very few people left in that area. Yak takes 3 snow mobiles and two new police recruits with him on a several day journey to the fishing lodge. They confirm that a man, a woman, and a child have been murdered. There are only a dozen people in the area and most are at the lodge. One of them is likely the murderer. But unexpectedly, something far more serious and dangerous is going on at Ragged Lake and almost everyone in the area may be in danger.

Beam Narrator: Chaz Allen Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 10-20-17 Publisher: RJ Beam Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals Publisher's Summary: When Officer Ben Graystock becomes fed up with drug dealer Avery Spade's ability to avoid arrest, he tries a highly illegal method to bust the criminal. Ben sets fire to Avery's house. The officer assumes fire investigators will see the meth lab evidence and make an arrest. The plan does not work, resulting in Ben tracking down Avery's other drug labs and setting additional arsons. Police officer and volunteer firefighter Stuart Thompson is assigned to investigate these arsons. Thompson also happens to be Graystock's close friend and partner at the police department. Fire investigation turns to a murder investigation after Avery Spade assumes the arsonist is a local rival dealer. Spade kills the rival using a fire as a form of street justice. As the investigation progresses more fire deaths occur. The pressure is on for Officer Thompson to find a suspect and end the fires before more people die. Members Reviews: Buy This Book - I couldn't put it down! I learned about Fire Cop from following the author's RescueHumor site on Facebook. Not an EMS professional myself, I am a nurse with a huge respect for firefighters, and I enjoy reading books about them. I have read many books by paramedics and firefighters and when I finished, I was left saying, "Well, that was fun, I enjoyed it, but it was the same old description of their work". Not Fire Cop! This book starts off quickly, with a local firefighter wanting to protect his town from a meth dealer. I am not going to spoil anything, so I won't describe further. But I do want to say the plot has some fascinating twists and surprises. I couldn't put it down and that it high praise from this devoted rader. Fire Cop in NOT just another descriptive book about what fire investigators do. There are excellent descriptions of how firefighters and investigators do their work, which is very helpful for a reader who isn't familiar with how fire departments and arson investigations function. The story gripped me from the the beginning and never let go. I HIGHLY recommend Fire Cop. It's a fast paced book that is very believable and had me wanting more. I can't wait for the author's next book. This is the perfect gift for anyone who is intrigued by firefighting, police work and arson investigations. Those who follow fire/EMS blogs will especially enjoy Fire Cop. Great job, RJ! Can't wait to read more. Incendiary Vigilante This is a good action story involving Police, Firefighters and Arson. Action takes place in a small town in Wisconsin where there is a drug manufacturing operation going on and a series of deadly arson fires. The lead Arson Investigator for the Police Dept. is also a volunteer firefighter in the town. The author of this story also has a background in both Police work and firefighting and this greatly benefits this story. The descriptions of the fire scenes, evidence collection and investigatory process is both accurate and realistic and will keep your interest When the focus of the investigation turns toward one of the investigators colleagues on the Police Dept. , you will find yourself eagerly seeking the outcome. This is a good investigatory story written by a credible author. If you enjoy books involving crime fighting and firefighting you will not be disappointed. Recommended. A good page turning mystery/thriller I have been a volunteer firefighter most of my adult life.

Title: The Lies We Tell Author: Theresa Schwegel Narrator: Hillary Huber Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 10-17-17 Publisher: Macmillan Audio Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals Publisher's Summary: "Narrator Hillary Huber portrays Chicago cop Gina Simonetti in this work and home drama with a somber attitude that echoes her intense personality...This heartbreaking story involves vulnerable people who are being abused by their caregivers. Huber's delivery matches those high stakes and faithfully portrays the tragic conclusions." AudioFile Magazine The Lies We Tell by Theresa Schwegel is a touching audiobook about a resourceful cop who perseveres against all odds to catch criminals and be the mother she wants to be. Chicago police detective Gina Simonetti is keeping a secret from the department: She has multiple sclerosis. Raising her young niece on her own, Gina hides her disease; she can't afford to lose her job. Anyway, she is healthier than most of the cops she knows and greatly appreciates the responsibility of caring for a child. But Gina's secret is threatened when a colleague calls her in to help trace a suspect: Johnny Marble has added to his rap sheet with an assault charge - this time against his mother. When Gina pays a visit to the mom in the hospital and winds up running into - and after - Marble, she finds herself in a physical confrontation she can't possibly win. He gets away, and Gina is faced with an impossible situation. She has to find him but knows doing so means turning in the one person who knows the true story of what happened. After all, now that he's seen her fight, Johnny Marble can reveal her deepest secret to the police department. Though alone in her struggle, Gina isn't alone in her search: In addition to a loyal partner, there is a curious detective and an entire force of coworkers on the hunt. And she's sympathetic to Marble's mother, a woman who is losing her mind to Alzheimer's. Still, Gina fears the fallout: she has no idea how will she keep her own world intact once Marble is found and the truth is out. Once again, Theresa Schwegel brings her remarkable talent to bear in this compelling crime audiobook about imperfect people struggling against all odds - and, this time, against the very people who are supposed to help. Members Reviews: Four Stars Good read! A fantastic read by a gifted writer A fantastic read by a gifted writer. Schwegel has a way of spinning gripping stories while writing books that are as incisive and well-written as the best non-genre fiction out there. She never disappoints. Five Stars Delicious summer reading! Five Stars Best yet Blackmail Collusion When Ginaâs physical health threatens her ability to do her job as a Chicago police detective, she needs to decide whom to trust as she works on the biggest case of her career. At risk are her brother George and his child Isabel, her partner, and several vulnerable senior citizens. The win â no win situations provide twists and turns as Gina confronts the one battle she knows she can never win. Goodreads Giveaway randomly chose me to receive this book. Although encouraged, I was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
