**ohm - the infinite dérive by Celine Barry. **
ohm is the infinite mantra. it drifts, reshapes, and re-spells itself across time and space.
under neoliberal global capitalism, it drifts endlessly—at times commodified as a brand or company, at times canonized in yoga classes, at times reappropriated, or inherited as
surname, and inscribed as the physical formula of resistance: Ω.
against the backdrop of its multiple, often contradictory, meanings, ohm became the framework of this episode: a bracket for some collected thoughts on policing, gentrification, touristification, and displacement in berlin—and on how the city is reappropriated through sound and music.
i invite you to join me in my dérives (driftings) through kreuzberg,
where police encode their presence through sirens,
where bouncers decide who belongs to the party,
where people of color resist exclusionary politics with critique, hope, and other parties,
and where all kinds of communities construct all kinds of other ways of dwelling, chilling, and singing.

…when we first arrived, the place was full of trash. we fixed the garage roof, set up free internet for ourselves and the neighborhood. we created a space where twenty people, seven dogs, and several workshops have found a safe and caring home for four years now. (…) we held workshops, repaired bikes, organized community kitchens, planted gardens, grew our own vegetables, hosted parties to cover construction costs, celebrated and mourned together. we carried each other through crises, built new wagons, and again and again created a home. (…)
but this idyll was constantly threatened. on the second day of building, ten police officers showed up. they wanted to know what we were doing, whether we had a rental contract. our landlord was pulled out of a family gathering and told we were criminals, occupying the site and causing trouble. a riot squad was already waiting. only a valid rental contract saved us. (…)
what followed was a fight for the simple right to be here. again and again new conditions, new controls, surveillance, harassment. hey, dear authorities! how would you feel if we came into your living room and told you how to arrange it!? (…)
all this in times when there are far more urgent issues: housing shortages, elderly poverty, unaffordable utilities, right-wing violence. instead, for four years, we’ve been forced to fight for a place that nobody else even wants—while also becoming a target of the far-right. they’ve had us on their radar for a long time. (…) and now we’re waiting for the court decision that could evict us. we don’t know if we’ll find another space without political support. but we are still here!

ohm ist das unendliche mantra. es treibt und verwandelt sich, es buchstabiert sich über zeit und raum neu. unter dem neoliberalen globalen kapitalismus streift es endlos weiter – mal als marke produktiv gemacht, mal als unternehmen kommerzialisiert, mal in yogakursen kanonisiert, mal wiederaneignet oder als familienname vererbt, und schließlich als physikalische formel des widerstands eingeschrieben: Ω.
vor dem hintergrund seiner vielfältigen, oft widersprüchlichen bedeutungen wurde ohm zum rahmen für diese folge: eine klammer für gesammelte gedanken zu polizierung, gentrifizierung, touristifizierung und verdrängung in berlin – und dazu, wie die stadt durch klang und musik wiederaneignet wird.
ich lade euch ein, mich auf meinen dérives (umherschweifen) durch kreuzberg zu begleiten,
wo die polizei ihre präsenz durch sirenen einschreibt,
wo türsteher entscheiden, wer zur party gehört,
wo people of color ausgrenzender politik mit kritik, hoffnung und eigenen festen entgegentreten,
und wo die unterschiedlichsten communities auf andere weisen wohnen, abhängen und singen.

bevor ich anfing, im nachtleben zu arbeiten, war es für mich jedes mal fifty-fifty, wenn ich mit meinen freunden ausging. wir waren so drei oder vier afrikanische jungs, warteten zwei stunden, und dann sagten sie: ah, ihr seid zusammen? – ja. – okay, heute nicht. – warum? – einfach weil ich es gesagt habe. also bitte, könnt ihr weitergehen? sie geben dir nicht mal die chance, viel zu diskutieren. und wenn du diskutierst, gilt das schon als aggressiv, weil du den ganzen prozess störst. (…)
und wenn du nicht reinkommst, fragst du dich manchmal: warum? sehe ich anders aus? oder muss ich anders aussehen, um reinzukommen? oder vielleicht bin ich nicht geeignet für diese szene. wenn diese leute mich immer wieder abweisen, dann zweifle ich irgendwann an mir selbst, verstehst du? vielleicht passe ich nicht.

wenn wir mit meinen freunden trotzdem noch motiviert waren, haben wir es bei einem anderen ort versucht.
wieder fifty-fifty.
genau. immer fünfzig-fünfzig reinzukommen, zwei frauen und fünf männer, ihr kommt nicht rein. und das passt halt nicht zur berliner mentalität, weil sie sich als genderfreundliche stadt darstellt. und gleichzeitig gehen die kriterien, um reinzukommen, nach geschlecht. was, wenn sich keiner von uns als er oder sie identifiziert? (…)
und was passiert, wenn ihr von club zu club geht und nirgends reinkommt? was macht ihr dann?
einfach in eine bar gehen, noch ein paar drinks nehmen und darüber reden, wie scheiße das system ist, und so was, und dann einfach nach hause gehen, im grunde.

also haben wir keine andere wahl. und wir dürfen auch nicht vergessen, dass es viele andere male gibt, wo wir reinkommen und feiern, und es ist eine andere nacht.
also du verlierst die hoffnung nicht.
nein, ich verliere die hoffnung nicht, nein, sicher nicht. die clubs würden in zwei jahren leer sein, wenn alle die hoffnung verlieren.
