How To Choose a Psychotherapist

This episode provides an essential guide on How To Choose a Psychotherapist, based on criteria developed by psychiatrist Jerry Gelbart, M.D., F.A.P.A.. Many people struggle to know where to begin looking for a quality therapist. While many therapists are amiable, supportive, and encouraging, we need to expect more than that. We dive into why modern, effective therapies are crucial, moving beyond older models such as Jungian, Analysis, or Supportive therapies that have not proven to be cost-effective. Discover the power of evidence-based models like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These approaches focus on learning new skills, changing behaviors and thinking, staying in the present, getting rid of judgments, and helping you take more control over your life, rather than focusing on the past or intellectualizing your problems. Tune in to learn the 7 crucial things to look for when selecting a psychotherapist: * Goal Setting: The therapist should set tangible goals with you. This ensures everyone (you, the therapist, and other members of the treatment team like a Psychiatrist or Primary Care MD) is focused in the same direction, helps you track your progress, and keeps you moving forward. * Beyond "Hand Holding Therapy": Look for a therapist who is not just supportive, listening, or reflecting—what Dr. Gelbart refers to as “HHT,” or Hand Holding Therapy. * Engagement: The therapist should be engaged and engaging, rather than passive, remote, or disinterested. * Clarity of Model: An effective therapist can clearly say what kind of therapy they are doing. * Homework: The therapist should give homework. This helps maintain continuity and ensures you are thinking and working between sessions, utilizing sessions mostly for teaching and the real world as the lab or application. * Open-Mindedness: The therapist should be open-minded to various treatments (including nutritional, medications, Eastern approaches, group therapy, hospital outpatient or inpatient), embracing a "Whatever works" philosophy. They should be willing to consult with others or refer you if it's not a good match. * Confrontation: The therapist is willing to confront you with necessary truths, delivered in ways you can hear them. We also discuss "plusses" or extras to look for, such as a focus on coping skills training, mindfulness-based practices, and a holistic Biological, Psychological, Social, and Spiritual perspective. Remember, health and wellness demand a multi-pronged approach involving behavior change, self-examination, and reprioritizing values. How to train your brain. Motivation Not Required -A brief mindful moment from Dr. Jerry Gelbart, expanding on The Potent Mind.

Motivation comes and goes. Clarity endures. In this episode, Dr. Jerry Gelbart explores why lasting behavior change doesn’t depend on feeling inspired but on acting from a deeper sense of purpose. Through mindful awareness and practical tools, he reveals how to move from mood-based reactions to value-based action. When we wait for motivation, we stay stuck in negotiation with the mind’s comfort-seeking default. But when we act from clarity—choosing what aligns with our best self—we gain freedom from that cycle. Learn to see resistance for what it is, to stop asking “Do I feel like it?” and start asking “Is this in my best interest?” This reflection challenges the myth that motivation is required and shows how awareness, intention, and identity can create genuine, sustainable change. Act first, let motivation catch up later. (From The Potent Mind: Reflections — moments to pause, notice, and realign with what truly matters. Episode 22: Integration

A Biopsychosocialspiritual Approach to Taking Care of Your Body, Mind, and Relationships In this episode, Dr. Jerry Gelbart explores the intricate relationship between our emotions and our intellect, and how to live a more integrated and effective life. Discover why our human capacity for higher reasoning, while a gift that allows us to build societies and be spiritual, can also lead to challenges like neurosis and insecurity by interfering with our emotional signals. Dr. Gelbart explains that we can be most effective as living organisms by utilizing both our emotional and intellectual systems, using the powerful metaphor that your passions are your "rocket fuel" and your values are the "rules of the game". This discussion introduces the biopsychosocial spiritual perspective, which views us not just as thinkers or feelers, but as complex beings whose different aspects of life are deeply interconnected. The episode breaks down how these spheres influence each other: * Biological: The importance of taking care of your body through healthy eating, exercise, regular physicals, and following doctor's orders for illnesses, which can include medications like anti-depressants or mood stabilizers for biological disorders. * Psychological: How to achieve clarity and potency by freeing your thinking from distortions, changing old scripts, and learning when to act on your feelings. * Social: As social animals, connecting with others is crucial. Studies show that couples in satisfying marriages, for instance, live longer and healthier lives. * Spiritual: The surprising psychological, social, and even biological benefits that come from spirituality. Ultimately, the episode emphasizes that improving one area—such as taking care of your body—will enhance your life psychologically, socially, and spiritually. It concludes with a call to action, reminding listeners that while the discussion provides a roadmap, the real work is up to them: "You still have to get into the water and swim". You’ll be encouraged to consider practical steps like mindfulness, yoga, meditation, listing your values, connecting with others, and contributing to the universe. You’ve reached the final session of The Potent Mind. Congratulations for staying with the journey all the way through. We’ve covered foundations and advanced practices — from awareness to resilience, from understanding to transformation. My hope is that you’ll continue to practice these tools in your daily life, and keep discovering the potential of your mind. This isn’t the end — it’s a beginning. Episode 21: The Language of the Heart

How to Listen to Your Tears, Distinguish Fear from Anxiety, and Let Go of Ego "Life is a great big canvas and you should throw all the paint on it you can". But what happens when the colors we're painting with are difficult emotions like fear, hurt, or envy? In this episode, we take a deep dive into the language of our feelings to help you understand what your body is truly trying to tell you. Join us as we explore: * The crucial difference between fear and anxiety. While fear is a survival response to a specific, known threat—like a car coming directly at you—anxiety is more vague and often tied to our ego and the fear of failure or rejection. We'll discuss how you can use your "wise mind" to assess real danger and calm your system down. * The unique pain of being hurt. It's more than just sadness; it’s a feeling of being wounded or "stabbed in the heart". Learn why it's so important to "listen to your tears," as they can tell you what you're truly experiencing, rather than getting stuck in your head. * Why you should prioritize pleasure. From a drive through Napa Valley to listening to the waves at the beach, we discuss how the feeling of pleasure tells you, "I like this," and why it deserves a more prominent place in your life. * The distinction between envy and jealousy. Do you want what someone else has, or are you afraid of losing what is yours? Envy is the craving that makes us feel petty and disgruntled, while jealousy is the fear of losing someone or something, which can lead to clinginess and control. We'll explore how insecurities and ego fuel these powerful emotions. This episode is packed with "Mind Gems" to help you navigate your inner world with more awareness. Discover how understanding the nuances of your emotions and letting go of ego can facilitate true peace of mind. How to train your brain. Episode 20: Navigating Shame, Guilt, and Pride: Healthy Emotional Processing

Stepping Back from the Mind In this episode, we explore the often-misunderstood emotions of shame, guilt, and pride, providing you with tools for healthier emotional processing. Learn about shame and forgiveness, and how justified guilt, a cognitive response to violating values, can be addressed through apology, amends, and improving for the future. We'll introduce techniques for stepping outside yourself – imagining your experiences as a movie or advising a friend – as a powerful way to process guilt and other emotions, fostering self-compassion. Finally, we examine pride: the natural feeling of celebration after an accomplishment, emphasizing that while it provides motivation, "Pride does not mean you're good," as Mind Gem 27 reminds us, guarding against the pitfall of feeling like you are "better than" others.
