Title: The Voyage of the St. Louis Subtitle: The History and Legacy of the Fateful Attempt to Resettle Jewish Refugees Before World War II and the Holocaust Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Bill Hare Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 21 mins Language: English Release date: 11-17-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, 20th Century Publisher's Summary: In the years preceding the height of the European Holocausts worst atrocities, Adolf Hitler, the new Chancellor of Germany, confronted the world with a moral test. His early experiment of allowing Jews to seek homelands elsewhere came to define his future course of action toward the Jewish population of the continent. The acidic hatred he bore for the Jewish presence in European society was clear enough, but the leader of the Nazi Party could not precisely gauge the international communitys likely response to a campaign of extreme abuse directed against his own citizens. Thus, in the months that preceded the Nazi invasion of Western Europe, he tested global resolve by allowing a ship to depart from the port of Hamburg, bound for Havana Harbor in Cuba. The MS St. Louis carried 973 Jewish refugees from various locations within and outside of Germany, most holding landing permits and visas enabling them to live in the United States. Following their arrival in Havana, they would wait their turn on the immigration list for a final destination. In the case of the United States, that period averaged at least three years, sometimes more.Once the St. Louis was out of port, however, the propaganda arm of the Nazi government arranged for the Cuban president to invalidate landing passes and prohibit the passengers from disembarking. This was done by creating a toxic, xenophobic atmosphere in which Jews were perceived as job-stealing intruders. After the Cuban rejection, Hitler watched as a solitary band of seagoing refugees wandered the world in search of a haven. Based on the international communitys response, he would soon know if the Jews had a champion anywhere in the worlds sovereign states. He watched with considerable satisfaction as nation after nation crumbled in one of the worst diplomatic fa Members Reviews: Antisemitism, immigration, and the intrigue related to finding someplace that the refugees could go to The e-book Voyage of the St. Louis was quite interesting. I found the political intrigue related to finding somewhere to take the refugees to be quite upsetting. I did not realize how deeply entrenched antisemitism was in the world. The drama behind the voyage of the St. Louis is somewhat despicable because Hitler knew that few if any countries were willing to allow the persecuted Jews to enter the countries. Therefore, since there was no place to ship the European Jews so he had an excuse to liquidate them. The book describes all the players involved in the intrigue. This book is important because it partially explains the roots of the Holocaust. Nicely written. A story that needed to be told about a dark time in World History. Nicely written. Three Stars Fair reading

A Crime in the Family Audiobook by Sacha Batthyany

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1013/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1013/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: A Crime in the Family Subtitle: A World War II Secret Buried in Silence - and My Search for the Truth Author: Sacha Batthyany Narrator: Christopher Oxford Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins Language: English Release date: 11-03-17 Publisher: Hachette Audio Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: History, 20th Century Publisher's Summary: A memoir of brutality, heroism, and personal discovery from Europe's dark heart, revealing one of the most extraordinary untold stories of World War II One night in March of 1945, on the Austrian-Hungarian border, a local countess hosted a party in her mansion, where guests and local Nazi leaders mingled. The war was almost over, and the German aristocrats and SS officers dancing and drinking knew it was lost. Around midnight, some of the guests were asked to "take care" of 180 Jewish enslaved laborers at the train station; they made them strip naked and shot them all before returning to the bright lights of the party. It was another one of the war's countless atrocities buried in secrecy for decades - until Sacha Batthyany started investigating what happened that night at the party his great aunt hosted. A Crime in the Family is the author's memoir of confronting his family's past, the questions he raised, and the answers he found that took him far beyond his great-aunt's party: through the dark past of Nazi Germany to the gulags of Siberia, the bleak streets of Cold War Budapest, and to Argentina, where he finds an Auschwitz survivor whose past intersects with his family's. It is the story of executioners and victims, villains and heroes. Told partly through the surviving family journals, A Crime in the Family is a disquieting and moving memoir, a powerful true story told by an extraordinary writer confronting the dark past of his family - and humanity. Critic Reviews: "Riveting" (Daily Express) "Evocatively written with a sharp journalist's eye, A Crime in the Family lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned." (Literary Review) Members Reviews: Interesting personal account A Crime in the Family is by Sacha Batthyany. It is a true story of the authorâs quest to find out about his familyâs past and come to some kind of acceptance of his own feelings. It is a story with deep roots in the Holocaust and in Hungarian history as well as the gulags of the Soviet Union. It is written in first person with segments from various diaries from the past. Sachaâs family was Hungarian aristocracy before World War II. His parents fled to Switzerland and raised him there. However, the feeling that they were just waiting to go home permeated the family and Sacha never felt quite at home. His Father eventually returned to Hungary; but Sacha continued to live and work in Switzerland where he was raising his family and working as a journalist. One day, a colleague handed him a news article about his Aunt Margit. It detailed a party during the war and called her âThe Hostess from Hellâ. At this party, the guests who were drunk, were given guns at midnight and they shot 180 Jews. Then, the party continued. Sacha set the article aside and continued work on his own article. Later, he called his Father to ask him about the event. His Father confirmed the event; but also said âit was unlikely that Margit was involved.

The book is very short and it enumerates the fact one can easily find on the internet. It might be useful as cliff notes as this book takes less than 10 minutes to read. The first line in the book is cross promotion for other material from the same author. These cross-promotions continue through the book. When the author is good they do not need to pepper the book with cross-promotions, the readers will seek out additional materials on their own. Cross promotions indicate that the content of the book is secondary, what the author is really after is capturing user traffic. Ali Julia review Know the story of the First World War.
