At the heart of Central America, a small country has become the great political laboratory of our time. El Salvador—governed since 2019 by Nayib Bukele, a businessman turned president and a symbol of the millennial era—has transformed itself from a country synonymous with violence and gangs into one presenting itself to the world as a model of extreme security and “order” at any cost. Yet, behind the record-breaking popularity ratings, the mega-prisons, and the narrative of the “world’s coolest president,” allegations of authoritarianism, censorship, and human rights violations are also mounting—all while his political project sparks a debate regarding the limits of democracy in the region.
