Elbows Out
At 27 years old, PhD student Dan ward was struggling to fight off the dreaded 'freshers flu'. Returning to his home town of South Shields, he headed to the GP, and eventually was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy ... or in his words "a big heart" Cardiomyopathy is a serious, often progressive disease of the heart muscle that impairs the heart's ability to pump blood, potentially leading to heart failure - and by 40, Dan was on life support awaiting a transplant. In this episode of Elbows Out, Dan talks to journalist Lucinda Borrell about the physical, but also mental implications of living with a long term health condition, and how these experiences have shaped his life and views of the world.
