Marty and Cindy share some trivia and context from the first Pink Panther movie Film Essentials Director: BlakeEdwards | Stars: David Niven, Peter Sellers, Robert Wagner, Capucine, Claudia Cardinale | Music: Henry Mancini | Runtime: 113 min | Box Office: $10.9 million Exiled Princess Dala carries the world's largest diamond, the "Pink Panther," to a ski resort where jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton (posing as "the Phantom") and bumbling Inspector Clouseau converge. Chases, romance, and a courtroom twistfollow, ending with an innocent man framed and the real thief free. Trivia HighlightsPeter Ustinov was the original Clouseau but quit daysbefore filming; the Mirisch Company sued him for $175,000. Sellers stepped in as a last-minute replacement and became a star. Ava Gardner was dropped as Madame Clouseau over salarydemands; Capucine was hired in a rush. Audrey Hepburn declined the princess role but recommended her friend Claudia Cardinale. The film was built as a David Niven vehicle, butSellers's Clouseau stole the picture and launched the franchise. Edwards and Sellers invented slapstick Clouseau duringthe car ride from the airport, bonding over silent comedians Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Sellers modeled Clouseau's look on the matchbox image of Captain Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel. Edwards and Sellers agreed comedy should hurt, following Leo McCarey's idea of "breaking the pain barrier." The bath scene's foaming agent burned Capucine andRobert Wagner, leaving Wagner temporarily blind; Niven got frostbite filming ski scenes and treated it with whiskey. The animated Pink Panther was designed by DePatie-Freleng from over 100 sketches and still works today as the OwensCorning mascot. Yves Saint-Laurent designed the film's gowns — his first Hollywood assignment. Claudia Cardinale, who didn't yet speak English, was dubbed by 20-year-old Gale Garnett. Niven, feeling upstaged, later asked Oscar producersnot to play the Panther theme for his walk-on. Sellers went through a brutal weight-loss regimen usingdiet pills, possibly contributing to a heart attack before the film's release. The waiter at the cocktail party is played by Wael Zuaiter, later the first target of Israel's Operation Wrath of God. This is the only Clouseau film without the exaggeratedFrench accent, Commissioner Dreyfus, or Cato — all arrived in A Shot in th eDark (1964). The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 2010. The film holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes today, despite mixed reviews at release. With Claudia Cardinale's death in September 2025,Robert Wagner is the last surviving main cast member. The piazza chase, with a pantomime horse endlessly thwarting an old man, pays homage to a sequence in Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (1940). Henry Mancini's score reached No. 8 on the Billboardalbum chart and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame; AFI ranked it No. 20 among the greatest film scores. The Pink Panther diamond would be classified as anextremely rare Type IIa pink diamond by real gemologists — but no such stone actually exists. Sellers, Niven, and John Le Mesurier later reunited in the Bond spoof Casino Royale (1967). Contact Us Subscribe on YouTube: @FadetoChat Email: ThePodTalkNetwork@gmail.com Visit: ThePodTalk.Net
