Hard to Sum Up w/Patrick DiMarchi
I'm here to talk with you about the current efforts to redistrict VA and disenfranchise 1.2 million voters. Long story short, Vote No. Here's Why: No Prior Relationship..... Traditionally, Virginia has been known as a historical state, a political state, and an evenly divided state. That last part is currently as risk. Efforts by the current administration have brought about the moment of a state government led vote on whether or not to speed up redistricting in Virginia ahead of the census which usually sparks such actions. These efforts are being pitched solely as an attempt to gain more national power against the Trump administration. What they don't mention is how many people this impacts. The answer, millions. The proposed map would relocate 48% of all Virginia voters. Meaning you will have no prior relationship with your new representative. This goes for many, but in no place more so than the Shenandoah Valley. The proposed map carves the valley (also known as the 6th district) into 5 different districts, 3 of which emcompassing over 100,000 voters a piece from the Northern Virginia/Fairfax regions. This creates such an imbalance as to forever rob citizens of the valley from any say in statewide politics for the next generation. To think you are a valley Democrat and to think you are entirely to benefit from this is to completely underestimate the negative effects of a one-party system. Virginia feels good at the moment because of how fair it is. It's actually favored in the Democrats direction with a 6 to 5 ration in the legislature. The current map brings that new number to a 10-1 ratio. If you live in the 81 corridor this could mean... TOLL ROADS. How else can the Democrats take the house? Novel idea.....
