Buried in the backyard: The murder of Nicklas Kinslow

On August 18, 2020, a woman called police to report a body was buried in the backyard of a south Austin home. Homicide detectives began their investigation into the claim. With the help of crime scene personnel, Austin Fire Department, and staff from the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, the body of a man (whose identity was later confirmed as Nicklas Kinslow) was unearthed from a grave constructed in the backyard. Two people would eventually be charged with murder, but the Travis County District Attorney's office would later drop the murder charges and allow both defendants to plead to lesser charges. In this first episode, we will talk about the murder of 21-year old Miranda Lopez, who was gunned down the day after Christmas 2020 while driving home with her sister after an outing. Two men were ultimately charged with her death. In March 2023, the district attorney's office gave one of the alleged suspects a plea deal. We will hear from Miranda's family as they share their loss and their experience navigating the criminal justice sentence seeking justice for Miranda.
