Why Skinny Should Never Be The Goal

I recently saw a reel where a woman completed a three-day water fast, barely ate a few bites of soup, and proudly ended the video with the words, “stay skinny.” As a dietitian—and as a Christian—that message stopped me in my tracks. Skinny is not a health goal. It’s a fragile identity. And for so many women, it leads to physical harm, mental exhaustion, and spiritual misalignment. From a physical health standpoint, ultra-low body fat is not only unsustainable, especially for women, but dangerous. When the body isn’t adequately nourished, hormones suffer, menstrual cycles disappear, bone density declines, immunity weakens, and healing slows. Losing your period is not a sign of success—it’s your body sounding the alarm that something is wrong. God designed our bodies for function, not fragility. The mental cost of chasing skinny is just as heavy. When food, calories, and the scale dominate your thoughts, peace becomes impossible. Life turns into constant self-surveillance: tracking every bite, compensating with exercise, and feeling shame for eating “normally.” This kind of restriction doesn’t bring freedom—it fuels obsession. As Scripture reminds us, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds” (Philippians 4:7). That peace cannot coexist with constant fear around food and weight. Spiritually, the pursuit of skinny pulls our focus inward. Instead of seeking God’s kingdom, we become consumed with how we look, how we compare, and whether our bodies measure up. Jesus calls us to something better: “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). Our health is meant to support our calling, not replace it. When weight becomes your identity, it collapses the moment life changes—postpartum seasons, illness, stress, or aging. But when your worth is rooted in Christ, it’s unshakable. You are not defined by a number on the scale or a clothing tag. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. So what should the goal be instead? Strength. Energy. Peace around food. Freedom to live fully and serve faithfully. ---------------------------------------- Action steps to start today: * Ask a new question: What helps me feel strong, nourished, and present today? * Practice weight-neutral check-ins: notice your energy, mood, strength, and sleep instead of a number. * Anchor your identity daily in Scripture when body thoughts spiral. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1). Let’s stop striving to be smaller and start living freer—fueled for the life God has called us to. ---------------------------------------- If this message resonated with you, share this episode with a friend who needs encouragement today. And if you’re ready to break free from diet culture and pursue faith-based wellness, subscribe to the podcast, leave a review and join this growing community of women choosing nourishment, peace, and purpose.

Why Consistency Beats Motivation (and How to Make Habits Stick)

Why Consistency Beats Motivation Emily Bates RDN Every January, we feel it—that quiet pressure to become a “better” version of ourselves. Better health. Better finances. A deeper spiritual life. And while you can start healthy habits any time of year, there’s something about the New Year that sparks fresh motivation. But here’s the problem: by mid-January, most people have already abandoned their goals. If you’ve ever thought, “I know what to do for my health—I just can’t stay consistent,” this message is for you. And here’s the good news: it’s not a willpower issue. It’s not a discipline problem. And it’s definitely not a personal failure. Healthy habits stick when they become automatic, not when they become extreme. Think about driving. The first time you merged onto the interstate, your knuckles were white and your heart was racing. Now? You might be handing your child a snack, eating peppers, and merging without a second thought. The action didn’t change—you did. Repetition turned fear into confidence. That’s exactly how healthy habits work. YOU’RE NOT BAD AT HABITS—YOU’RE STILL PRACTICING So many women carry shame around food and health, believing they’re “bad at consistency.” But no one expects a 16-year-old to drive effortlessly on day one. Why do we expect that from ourselves with nutrition and wellness? Grace matters here. From a faith-based health perspective, growth is layered. Small, repeated choices build confidence—and confidence creates momentum. THE POWER OF HABIT STACKING (WITHOUT OVERHAULING YOUR LIFE) Habit stacking simply means attaching a new habit to something you already do. * Drink a glass of water before your morning coffee * Stretch while your coffee brews * Add protein to your coffee * Take supplements before brushing your teeth * Add one nutrient-dense food to dinner instead of changing the whole meal Your brain loves familiarity. When you stack habits, you reduce mental load—and that’s especially powerful for busy moms and women carrying a heavy daily rhythm. GENTLE NUTRITION: SMALL ADD-ONS, BIG IMPACT You don’t need a new routine. You need better attachment points. Cook rice in broth instead of water. Sprinkle chia or hemp hearts on meals. Toss veggies into eggs, pasta, or sauces. These tiny upgrades don’t feel hard—but over time, they change how your body feels and how confident you become. Just like faith grows through daily practice, health does too. YOUR ONE SMALL STEP THIS WEEK Here’s your challenge: pick one habit to stack this week. Just one. Repeat it. Celebrate it. Let it build confidence. Because healthy habits don’t stick because you’re strict. They stick because you’re consistent. CTA: If this encouraged you, I’d love to hear from you. Message me through the show notes or connect with me on social media and tell me your one small habit. And if this episode helped you, please share it with a friend or leave a review—it helps this faith-filled wellness community grow. You’re not behind. You’re still practicing. 💛

How to Eat Healthy When You Have No Time

Because one of my biggest life goals is helping real women eat well without stress, shame, or a kitchen full of unused Pinterest ingredients. If you’ve ever stood in front of the fridge at 5:00 p.m., exhausted and overwhelmed, wondering What on earth are we going to eat tonight?—you are not alone. We’ve all been there. The mental load of meal planning, the pressure to do it “right,” and the guilt that creeps in when frozen pizza wins again can make food feel way harder than it needs to be. But here’s the truth: healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated to be nourishing. In fact, the simpler it is, the more sustainable it becomes. GOD CARES ABOUT FEEDING YOU—NOT PERFECTLY, BUT DAILY Scripture reminds us that God’s heart is provision, not performance. Jesus teaches us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Not tomorrow’s meal plan. Not a gourmet spread. Just what we need—today. Throughout the Bible, we see God meet His people with simple provision: bread and meat for Elijah, vegetables and water for Daniel, daily sustenance that fueled obedience and trust. Food was never meant to be a source of anxiety or identity—it’s a gift meant to sustain us so we can live out our callings. When we overcomplicate food, we often miss the peace God intends. Healthy meals aren’t about impressing anyone; they’re about caring for the bodies He’s given us. THE 10-MINUTE MEAL FORMULA THAT ACTUALLY WORKS When life is full, I keep meals simple and balanced with one repeatable formula: Starch + Protein + Non-starchy Vegetable That’s it. Think: * Rice + rotisserie chicken + frozen veggies * Salmon + quinoa + roasted asparagus * Salad kit + protein * Crockpot chicken used twice Simple meals done consistently will always beat perfect meals done rarely. And here’s the secret: simple meals can still be sacred. Light a candle. Say a prayer. Sit down together. Nourishment isn’t just physical—it’s relational and spiritual too. ---------------------------------------- Imagine This… Imagine dinnertime without panic. Imagine meals that fuel your body and free your mind. Imagine thanking God for what’s in front of you—without guilt or stress. That’s the freedom simplicity brings. ---------------------------------------- 👉 Want my full list of 10-minute meal ideas and the mindset shifts that make healthy eating sustainable? Listen to Episode 8 of The Heart Body Mind Podcast and steal my exact approach to stress-free, God-honoring meals—because when health is simple, joy has room to grow.
