I Didn’t Need To See That
This week on the pod, we celebrate Aarons birthday by journeying back to a simpler time, possibly to the very moment that signaled the end of an era as we know it: The weirdly horny 90’s comedy. Channel your inner darkness into something beautiful with us, as we journey Into the Bone-Zone… or “Down Town” as the movie calls it, with 2001’s “Monkeybone”. For a movie that flopped hard at the box office (So hard we actually remember the news being as young as we were in 2001), there’s actually a lot of really bold and inventive things here on display. Pulling from Influences like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Beetlejuice”, Monkeybone swings for the fences with it’s incredibly laborious combination of Live action, stop motion and practical effects on display. Though all that attention paid to the effects seems sorely lacking in the script department, with characters that feel underdeveloped and a plot that just sort of happens at you, and a struggle in balancing the dark/comedic tones in the film. Plus, Aaron reflects fondly on the last positive memory before the towers fell, reminiscing on a cast full of household names that seemed to all vanish after this movie, and just what exactly did this movie awaken in the two of us?
