Elisha The Prophet (12): The Anointing of Jehu

Commissioned through the prophet Elisha and anointed by a son of the prophets, Jehu was raised up by God to execute long-promised judgment against the house of Ahab. In this episode, we examine the account of Elisha's encounter with Hazael in Damascus from 2 Kings 8:7-15, where the prophet reveals that Hazael will become king of Syria and bring devastating war upon Israel. This brief but powerful narrative connects the work of Elijah and Elisha, showing how God's instructions to Elijah in 1 Kings 19 were fulfilled through his successor. Beyond the historical details—Ben-Hadad's assassination, Hazael's rise to power, and extra-biblical evidence like the Tel Dan Stele—the lesson draws out a timeless truth: God sees the full picture of sin and rebellion among His people and works on His own timeline, sometimes even through ungodly men, to bring about judgment and ultimately call His children back to repentance.
