Psalms - "Telling the Next Generation" - Psalm 139 & 78 - Tim Nay

Telling the Next Generation Psalm 139 & 78 Tim Nay Part of The Raw and Real Psalms May 31, 2026 > O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. —Psalm 139:1-4 God knows everything about us. > You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. —Psalm 139:5 Hem = tsuwr = a military term meaning “to besiege” or “to encircle” Meaning of Psalm 139:5 Hemmed in = PROTECTION;  Lay your hand on = DIVINE GUIDANCE > Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. —Psalm 139:6Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. —Psalm 139:7-14 God knows everything about us. > Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, —Psalm 78:1-6 Parents teach us to know God. > I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old —Psalm 78:2 TAKEAWAY:  Will the next generation know they are fully known & loved by God because of you?

Psalms - "A Life Well Lived..." - Psalm 90 - Mike Maglish

A Life Well Lived...Psalm 90 Mike Maglish Part of The Raw and Real Psalms May 14, 2026 Introduction to Psalm 90  * Only Psalm written by Moses  * Likely the OLDEST Psalm  * Opening Psalm of Book 4 (From Collapse/Confusion to Moses/God)  * Written near the end of Moses’ life  * Wisdom literature from the wilderness Begins with knowing God is our eternal REFUGE Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. —Psalm 90:1–2. They lived in tents  They wandered in the wilderness  They were promised a “LAND”, but GOD is their REFUGE > The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. —Deuteronomy 33:27You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths, that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” —Leviticus 23:42–43These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. —Hebrews 11:13–16 Recognizes life is BRIEF. > You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. —Psalm 90:3–6By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” —Genesis 3:19A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?”All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. —Isaiah 40:6-8yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. —James 4:14 Is rooted in the FEAR of the Lord. > For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you? —Psalm 90:7–11 Moses connects:  - Sin  - Holiness  - Wrath  - Mortality  Death is not merely biological. Something is broken.  > Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— —Romans 5:12For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 6:23 Is built with intentional WISDOM. > So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. —Psalm 90:12 Numbering your days means:  - Repenting of sin  - Spending time with God DAILY  - Prioritizing the Church  - Discipling your family  - Reconciling relationships  - Serving instead of consuming  - Investing in eternal things  - Becoming more like Christ  > The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. —Proverbs 9:10But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. —Hebrews 3:13 Asks God to make it MATTER. > Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children.  > Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! —Psalm 90:13–17I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. —John 15:5Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. —1 Corinthians 15:58Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. —Colossians 3:23-24 TAKEAWAY: A life well lived is surrendered to God’s eternal PURPOSES. ASK THESE QUESTIONS  - What kind of person am I becoming?  - What is shaping me?  - What am I worshipping?  - What am I spending my life on?  - What would matter if I stood before God today?  STOP OR START  - STOP consuming endlessly  - STOP sitting on the sidelines  - STOP returning to your sin  - START following Jesus  - START spending time with Jesus  - START leading/investing in the Kingdom

Psalms - "Responding to Enemies" - Psalm 57 & I Samuel 24 - Tim Nay

Responding to Enemies Psalm 57 & I Samuel 24 Tim Nay Part of The Raw and Real Psalms May 7, 2026 An enemy is often described as someone who actively seeks to injure, undermine, or block another’s success, growth, or well-being. This can be done through physical harm, emotional abuse, slander, gossip, etc. Can you think of anyone who is your enemy? > “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.” —Psalm 57:1 ESV When attacked, I will first realize my own need for God’s mercy. > “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. 3 He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!’ —Psalm 57:2–3 ESV David reminds himself that God will act with help, love, and faithfulness. When afraid, I will remember God’s promises. > “My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts— the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! 6 They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah” —Psalm 57:4–6 ESV“7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.” —James 3:7-10 ESV When wounded, I will bring my pain to God honestly. > “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! 8 Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! 9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! —Psalm 57:7–11 ESV When overwhelmed, I will choose worship over revenge/bitterness. > 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. —Romans 12:14-21 ESV16 As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. 18 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. —1 Samuel 24:16-19 ESV TAKEAWAY: Trust God enough to respond with goodness and a worship filled heart.
