Underneath California: The Hidden Depths of Phantom Planet’s The Guest

On this episode we dive into The Guest, the 2002 breakout record from Phantom Planet that proved they were far more than just “the band from The O.C.” While “California” would eventually become unavoidable thanks to television fame, the deeper cuts reveal a band operating at a much higher level than most people realized, blending sun-soaked power pop with vulnerable, emotionally charged songwriting and flashes of restless garage rock energy. Tracklist: 1. California 2. In Our Darkest Hour 3. Turn, Smile, Shift, Repeat 4. Nobody's Fault 5. All Over Again 6. So I Fall Again 7. The Guest This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network. No Filler Rewind - Garage Rock Evolved: Phantom Planet's Self-Titled Re-Invention

In lieu of our latest episode on Phantom Planet's "The Guest" from 2002, we're dropping a Rewind on an episode that was released way back in July of 2020, where we cover their self-titled album that came just two years later. Phantom Planet was once most notably known as the group that sings that song from The O.C. (you know, the one that goes "California, here we come!"). But on their 2004 self-titled record, they traded in those melodic, poppy song structures for a more frenetic, fuzz-driven garage sound. We argue in this episode that this is perhaps one of the greatest garage rock records to come out of the early 2000s (certainly one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated), with its impassioned vocal performances, pummeling drums and bass, and guitar riffs that could punch through a wall. Tracklist: 1. Big Brat 2. Nobody's Fault 3. Jabberjaw 4. After Hours 5. You're Not Welcome Here 6. The Meantime 7. The Spirit of the Beehive - hypnic jerks 8. Arms of Tripoli - Edwards Edward This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices [https://megaphone.fm/adchoices]
