Descripción

Shanin Blake is known for her unapologetic cultural appropriation of (and profiteering off) a traditional Hawaiian practice. Shanin and her boyfriend Layup of @whutzgud were part of a group that flew to Maui on August 8th, the same day devastating wildfires started killing over 100 people and destroying thousands of homes. Tourists were asked to leave. Opal (@itsopal.wav), a bass music producer/DJ born and raised on Maui, was friends with the group. They told her they were leaving Maui the next day. Over the next few days, they didn’t realize their location was still shared with Opal. Despite saying they were leaving the next day, they stayed on Maui for three more days. They posted a story claiming they’d left “right away.” Opal posted screenshots of their location, proving that wasn't true. They responded by claiming she was spreading misinformation (with no further explanation). After we shared Opal's posts on @musicindustrywatchdog, Layup posted a “diss track.” In our new episode of @ragegirlspod, Opal discusses the impact of their actions.
