Acerca de Silhouettes on the Sarcophagus

From the mystifying mind of ZouZou Mansour–visionary artist, writer, and ferocious front-woman of the Philly garage-rock group SORAIA–comes a brand new podcast that’s unafraid to probe the mind and dissect the darkest corners of humanity. Silhouettes on the Sarcophagus is an epic audio analysis of everything creepy, cryptic, and macabre. From Edgar Allan Poe’s unsettling poetry, to the standout cinematography of "The Shining," and even the gruesome details of the Black Dahlia murder, ZouZou Mansour takes the listener on a journey exploring the ways darkness creeps into the social conscious through art, philosophy, and pop culture. Why do some people love slasher films, while others faint at the mere mention of blood? Why is the practice of the ‘dark arts’ considered blasphemy to some, but a natural way of life to others? And how do the origins of scary campfire stories go as far back as the Gods of Ancient Greece, Egypt, and Mesopotamia? Learn the secrets behind these mysteries, and many more, on Silhouettes on the Sarcophagus with ZouZou Mansour. Silhouettes on the Sarcophagus is produced and published through Acast podcast publisher, and available anywhere you listen to podcasts. Episode 7: "Memento Mori" (Part 2)

This covers the waaaaaay huge topic I could go on and on about - "Memento Mori". However, in this episode, I do go off a bit on the feminist view of the buddhist practice of corpse meditation after describing it to a T. In this episode, there are a number of topics covered, so it is information heavy. Ashley Otis did this script (and I added my fifty million cents). Covered topics are: *Monks watching cadaver deterioration as a form of meditation ("corpse meditation") and how the corpses were typically of female bodies *Victorian Era Death Mourning and Mourning Jewelry/ Fashion *Victorian Era Death Portraits *Curiosity Shops: their origin stories and the oldest curiosities shoppe in Seattle where I talk about its assortment of mummies, taxidermy, and its greatest collection of shrunken heads *The world's most famous skull *Halloween and Día De Los Muertos celebrations (and some arguments about how capitalism are attempting to commandeer people's traditions and the dangers of them claiming cultural traditions as their own) *The Twitter Nun keeping the true meaning of "Memento Mori"alive! ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Episode 6: "Memento Mori" (Part 1)

Once again, ZouZou goes down the rabbithole with the topic of "Memento Mori", which translated from Latin means, "Remember you must die" . Scripted and researched by our very own Ashley Otis (who also brought you the "Black Dahlia" episode last season - which then led directly into "The Minotaur" episode), her findings are supplemented by my insights and own experiences with "Memento Mori" in my travels to both Paris and Rome. We cover these topics as they influence or are effacted by the ideology in part one, and discuss: What is morality anyway? And how death is the great equalizer. --Ancient Rome, Stoicism, and Christianity with Memento Mori --Cadaver monuments (Bone Churches and Catacombs) --Danse Macabre --The (once-outlawed) Devil's Chord in Music --Vanitas and Their Connection to Modern Art --and a Secret Midnight Concert among 6 million skeletal remains Enjoy! ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Episode 5: The Algonquian Wendigo: Myth, Mystery, and Mirror

WARNING: Spoiler alert (in very general) for "The Last Of Us" Season 2. The "Wendigo" is such a substantial spirit and monster that possesses an already weakened mind or soul in Algonquian culture. A creature that can resurrect if not killed correctly, and mostly can inhabit one who separates themself from the community out of greed or selfishness. Western culture has borrowed this wendigo, or Witiko, in many modern series and movies. I talk briefly about the look and history of the wendigo, compare it to many modern creatures and society's excesses, some horror stories that focus on the wendigo you may enjoy, ending with two very intense wendigo psychosis stories. I loved starting Season 2 with this guy who I've been studying for a few months now. There WILL BE a Part 2. More research is currently being done on the Algonquian view of the Wendigo and how it goes about inhabiting the individual. Also, how the malevolent spirit shaped their community and what it reveals about the early Algonquian people and their culture. I'm so fascinated by this creatiure and the art that surrounds it! ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy [https://acast.com/privacy] for more information.
