The LA City Council just voted 10-5 to put non-citizen voting on the November ballot — and Elon Musk summed it up in five words: "They have imported voters to win." The measure was introduced by DSA council member Hugo Soto-Martinez and passed 10-5. If LA voters approve it in November, it would amend the city charter to allow non-citizens — including DACA recipients, TPS holders, and legal permanent residents — to vote in city and LAUSD elections. But here's the problem: there's no implementation framework, no cost study, and the county that actually runs LA's elections was never consulted on whether any of this is even possible. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez said it on the floor: "I don't even know that the county has actually been consulted in their ability to implement this." They voted to put it on the ballot without asking the people who run their elections if it could work. And the political stakes go even higher — Nithya Raman, another DSA council member who voted YES, just beat Spencer Pratt in the primary and is now in the mayoral runoff against Karen Bass. The same person who just voted to expand voting to non-citizens could soon be running the city. Santa Ana voters rejected a nearly identical measure in November 2024 — 62% to 38%. Will LA follow?
