Episode 2: Closing the Achievement Gap in Education with Dr. Toya Conston

In episode two of the educational disparities podcast, I will follow-up on my conversation with Dr. Toya Conston. Dr. Conston provides her perspective on how to close the achievement gap in education. Dr. Toya Conston is an Educational Psychologist and Adjunct Professor at Texas Southern University, Clinical Assistant Professor, and Program Manager of the Human Development and Family Studies program at the University of Houston's College of Education.  Moreover, Dr. Conston founded two educational mentor programs, "Ed Psych in Real Life" and "Strong Men of Valor," to allow college students and professionals to mentor youth in the greater third ward area of Houston, Texas. Dr. Conston's views are her own as a private citizen and do not reflect her current, former, or future employers' views.

Welcome to The Educational Disparities Podcast (Trailer)

Hello and welcome to the educational disparities podcast, where I will raise awareness, provide oppositional viewpoints, interview professionals and leaders in the educational sector and engage in deep-scientific rooted conversations backed by scientific research. In this first episode, I will discuss who I am and the inspiration in starting this podcast, and what to expect. My name is Aledrian Kemp, and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. I major in Human Development and Family Studies, and this semester I am enrolled in HDFS 4397 educational disparities and social injustice taught by Dr. Allison Master. Attending this course sparked my interest in creating this podcast and engaging in deep, meaningful conversations on educational disparities with leaders in the field, such as educational, developmental, and school psychologists, teachers, and school administrators. The overall goal is to learn how to be a more proactive and effective future educational leader in the fight for equity, equality, social justice in the educational system. Therefore, the purpose of this podcast is to allow listeners to gain perspectives and understanding from educational practitioners on educational disparities and how we can move the conversation forward on how to close the educational disparities gap. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy it!
