Georgetown University Update: New Residences, Common App Pilot, Sports Highlights & Campus Events—Fall 2025 Highlights

Good afternoon, Hoyas! It's Monday, September 8, 2025, and here's what's happening around Georgetown University. Over the summer, Georgetown made significant strides in campus development and sustainability. The former Henle Village has been transformed into a new apartment-style residence hall, set to open this fall. This facility will accommodate juniors and seniors, featuring 740 beds, in-unit kitchens, wellness spaces, and shared green areas. The project aims for LEED Platinum certification, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency. Additionally, the McCourt School of Public Policy unveiled its new home at 125 E St. NW, a state-of-the-art facility spanning over 150,000 square feet, including 20 classrooms, a 400-seat auditorium, and a rooftop terrace with views of the U.S. Capitol. Georgetown has announced a three-year pilot program to accept the Common Application, starting in August 2026 for the Fall 2027 entering class. This initiative aims to build a more inclusive and socioeconomically diverse student community. The university will continue to accept its current application alongside the Common App. The Georgetown sailing team has released its 2025 fall schedule, featuring 15 regattas across the East Coast, including a home regatta hosted at Georgetown. The season kicked off this past weekend with the Laser South Qualifier and Navy Women's regattas at the U.S. Naval Academy. In field hockey, the Hoyas opened their 2025 campaign with a pair of neutral-site games in Towson, Maryland, facing Davidson and Appalachian State. The team will continue its season with upcoming matches against Sacred Heart and Lock Haven. Men's golf began their fall season on September 5 at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke University. The team is set to compete in five events this fall, including hosting the 41st Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate at Echo Lake Country Club in October. Women's soccer has also kicked off their season, opening with a home game against Old Dominion on August 14. The team has a challenging schedule ahead, featuring several opponents who made the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service is celebrating its 10th anniversary this semester. The Fall 2025 Fellows class brings decades of experience in politics, law, public policy, public service, and journalism to the Hilltop. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the Fellows in discussion groups, case studies, and one-on-one conversations throughout the semester. For those planning for the future, Georgetown is hosting a two-night educational course titled "Retirement Planning University" on September 16 and 17. The sessions will cover investment strategies, estate planning, tax planning, and more. The event will be held at the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center. That's all for today's update. Stay tuned for more news and events happening around campus. Hoya Saxa!

Georgetown News: New Interim Provost, Humanities Hub, Sustainability Projects, SFS Jakarta Campus, and Hoyas Basketball Highlights

Good afternoon, Hoyas! It's Monday, September 1st, and welcome back to campus. Let's dive into the latest news and updates from Georgetown University. Today, we're enjoying mostly sunny skies with a comfortable high of 81 degrees. The pleasant weather is expected to continue throughout the week, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Georgetown has appointed Soyica Diggs Colbert, a 2001 alumna and the university's vice president for interdisciplinary initiatives, as interim provost. In her new role, Colbert will oversee academic affairs, ensuring the university's commitment to excellence in education and research. The university has unveiled a new hub for the humanities on the Hilltop campus. This dedicated space aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and support the Georgetown Humanities Initiative, enhancing the role of humanities in our academic community. A three-year sustainability project is underway on Healy and Copley Lawns. This initiative focuses on improving green spaces and promoting environmental stewardship on campus. Additionally, the Office of Sustainability and Residential Living have introduced 'In-Hall Sustainability Representatives' to advocate for eco-friendly practices within residence halls. Georgetown's McDonough School of Business has launched the Business of Health Initiative. This program aims to prepare leaders to tackle challenges in the healthcare industry by integrating business acumen with health sector insights. In January 2025, Georgetown opened the SFS Asia-Pacific campus in Jakarta, Indonesia. This marks the university's first campus in Indonesia, offering programs designed for policymakers in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team, under second-year head coach Ed Cooley, concluded the 2024–25 season with an 18–16 record. The team participated in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Nebraska. Notably, players Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy were selected in the NBA Draft, marking the first time since 2008 that two Hoyas were drafted in the same year. A group of approximately 29 current or recent students accessed unauthorized data containing sensitive academic information due to a system setting change. The university is addressing the issue to ensure data security and prevent future incidents. That's all for today's update. Stay informed, stay engaged, and let's make this semester a great one.
