I've watched so many tutorials on limiters vs compressors where music production coaches will tell people you ONLY want to use limiters on the master mix bus. I believe this is false.  Then it comes to music production two things matter and all the technical stuff can go out of the window. #1 Does it sound good? #2 Is it quick and effective?  Limiters make it so easy to add compression to vocals, drums, and synths during the songwriting process. I use limiters over compression while composing songs because it makes it faster and easier to come up with ideas.  I'm not saying compressors don't have their place or are invaluable. Compressors are amazing but I think people complicate it and act like using a limiter will be the end of the world.  For many beginners, sometimes a limiter is exactly what you need. A limiter can work as training wheels for learning how to using compression. In this episode, Lady Killagrew interviews Hi iM NEiL and they talk about the Waves single, Neil's childhood, how Neil got into music, the songwriting process and so much more. Q&A FROM THIS EPISODE: Q: What is the meaning of Waves? A: The lyrics are inspired by a real story where Neil was swimming in the ocean and got caught in a riptide. He had given up on swimming due to exhaustion and began to drown. As he went down, a wave grabbed him, pushed him to the bottom of the ocean, drug him against the sea bed and spat him back onshore. Neil uses this story to relate to taking on a bigger argument than he could actually handle. At the moment, Neil wanted to give up on his relationship with Hannah. The rest of the song Neil expresses his love for Hannah and how he realizes he let negative emotions and thoughts blind him from seeing the true beauty of their relationship. Q: Who Made The Cover Art? A: Hannah (Neil's wife) made the cover art for Hi iM NEiL's new single "Waves". Q: Your music gets better and better. What has helped you get better at making music with higher production quality? A: Simply, listening again and again and revising a little bit week after week, watching YouTube videos, always asking questions, and always remember that there is more to learn. Q: How long have you been producing music? A: Hi iM NEiL has been producing music since he was 14 years old. Neil has been making music since he was six on his sister's drumset. Q: How did you learn to produce music? A: Hi iM NEiL learned to produce by being involved in the EDM community and always talking about music and getting feedback as often as possible. Neil also credits his knowledge of music production to watching YouTube videos. Q: What is mixing and master? A:  Mixing and mastering are the final steps when it comes to making a song.  The reason people mix and master songs is to ensure that all the individual instruments are sitting at the right volume and the tack is as loud and as clear as possible on all speakers.
