Chemist. Submariner. Regulator. MBA. A Story of Reinvention | Roy Elliott | CS #24
Roy Elliott’s career has been anything but linear.
In this episode of Candidate Spotlight, Roy shares the story of continuously reinventing himself from growing up with very little, to working as a chemist, to serving aboard nuclear submarines in the U.S. Navy, to overseeing nuclear operations with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Along the way, Roy learned how to lead in zero-failure environments, make decisions under pressure, and adapt when life forced him into new chapters.
Now, as an Executive MBA candidate at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Roy is building multiple businesses, developing software focused on soccer performance and goalkeeper evaluation, and writing a book reflecting on the lessons, pressure, and reinvention that shaped his journey.
We talk about:
* Growing up poor and discovering his academic potential
* Leadership aboard nuclear submarines
* High-pressure moments where lives were on the line
* The transition from military leadership to federal oversight
* Leading by authority vs. leading by influence
* Reinvention, resilience, and betting on yourself
* Why persistence, patience, and peace matter more than ever
This is a conversation about growth, pressure, identity, and what happens when someone refuses to stay in the same version of themselves forever.
