When It's Not "Just Anxiety" or "Just ADHD": How Bloodwork, Hormones, Liver Health, THC, Alcohol, Sleep, and Nutrition Affect the Brain

In this episode of The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast, Stephanie Buckley explores why ADHD, OCD, anxiety, low motivation, emotional dysregulation, nausea, constipation, gaming, THC use, alcohol use, and stimulant medication side effects cannot be understood through behavior alone. The brain is connected to the body, and the body is influenced by blood sugar, hormones, liver function, gut health, iron levels, Vitamin D, B12, thyroid function, sleep, sunlight, hydration, nutrition, and inflammation. Stephanie breaks down why common blood panels such as CBC, CMP, ferritin, iron panel, thyroid labs, Vitamin D, B12, fasting insulin, A1C, hormone panels, and inflammation markers may offer important insight into mood, focus, executive functioning, emotional regulation, appetite, fatigue, and anxiety symptoms. She also explains how THC, alcohol, stimulant medication, gaming, lack of sunlight, poor sleep, processed foods, simple carbohydrates, and low protein intake can quietly stack together and make a neurodivergent nervous system look lazy, defiant, unmotivated, or emotionally unstable when it may actually be under-supported. This episode is especially helpful for parents of teens and young adults, adults with ADHD or OCD, partners trying to understand emotional shutdown or avoidance, and families who want to look deeper than surface behavior. Stephanie explains why better food choices, protein before carbohydrates, hydration, sunlight, movement, medical evaluation, and nervous system support can become part of a more compassionate and effective path forward. In This Episode, You'll Learn Why ADHD, OCD, and anxiety are affected by the whole body, not just the brain. How iron, ferritin, Vitamin D, B12, thyroid function, liver health, blood sugar, and inflammation can influence mood, focus, motivation, and emotional regulation. Why stimulant medication, THC, alcohol, poor sleep, gaming, low sunlight, and inconsistent eating may worsen executive dysfunction. How simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, and ultra-processed foods affect blood sugar and emotional stability. Why what looks like laziness, immaturity, avoidance, or lack of ambition may actually be a dysregulated nervous system asking for support.

Helping Neurodivergent Loved Ones Understand the Neurotypical Mental Load Why What Feels Like Criticism May Actually Be Their Brain Sequencing, Forecasting, and Carrying the Invisible Map of Family Life

In this episode, Stephanie flips the lens and helps neurodivergent loved ones understand the neurotypical mental load. What may feel like criticism, nagging, or control may actually be sequencing, forecasting, time tracking, and carrying the invisible map of family life. Stephanie breaks down how everyday moments like groceries, dinner, laundry, school mornings, sports bags, appointments, travel, pet care, and bedtime can carry enormous cognitive load. This episode offers a compassionate reframe for ADHD and neurodivergent families: the goal is not blame. The goal is shared systems, visible routines, and true ownership so one person does not have to carry the entire household alone. Topics: neurotypical mental load, ADHD, neurodivergent relationships, prospective cognition, cognitive sequencing, executive function, invisible labor, family systems, emotional regulation, shared responsibility.

Let Me Introduce You To The Skylight Calendar: An External System That Replaces Nagging, Reduces Conflict, and Rebuilds Executive Function in ADHD Homes!!!

If you feel like you're constantly reminding, repeating, and managing everything in your home, this episode is for you. In many families, the parent becomes the system holding all the structure, expectations, and follow-through and over time, that leads to frustration, burnout, and disconnection. In this episode, I break down why this dynamic actually works against the ADHD brain and how it activates stress instead of responsibility. More importantly, I introduce the external system I use with families that shifts the entire household dynamic reducing conflict, increasing independence, and creating real follow-through. This isn't about trying harder. It's about building a system that actually works. You will be so thilled for this amazing recommendation!! Tools I recommend! Dear Parent: Why Some Young Adults Quit Jobs So Quickly…Understanding Friction Intolerance, Anxiety Avoidance, and Workplace Development!

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. If you're new here, my name is Stephanie Buckley. I'm a Parenting Strategist and Family Systems Coach who specializes in ADHD, executive functioning challenges, emotional regulation, and the patterns that keep families stuck in the same arguments on repeat. I created this podcast because I didn't want parents to feel alone, and I wanted to translate what's happening under the behavior neurologically, psychologically, and relationally so you can stop taking the behavior personally and start responding strategically. I'm also a mom to a thriving 23 year neurodivergent son with ADHD and I've been married for over three decades, so I bring both professional insight and lived experience into these conversations because real families need real tools. Season 6 episode # 125 explores why some young adults leave jobs quickly and how anxiety avoidance, executive functioning development, and family dynamics influence workplace persistence. Dear Parent of a 20 Something, If your young adult were to fill out a dating profile right now, with complete honesty about the current state of their life, who would match with them? That question changes everything. Because failure to launch is not about laziness, bad character, or parenting mistakes. It is about a nervous system caught in a dopamine loop, a brain that has learned that the world will absorb the consequences of staying stuck, and a family system that has been accidentally organized around protecting a young adult from the very experiences that would move them forward. This guide is the most comprehensive resource I have ever created for parents navigating this situation. It covers everything: the neuroscience, the behavioral psychology, the real-world adulting skills, the body protocol, the family system dynamics, and the honest conversations most parents are avoiding because they do not know how to have them without destroying the relationship.
