Summer in 1980 was unusually wet across England and in the Midlands town of Burton upon Trent the night of the 15th June felt unseasonably cold, with a light rain slanting in on stiffening breeze. The sliver of a new moon was masked behind a blanket of cloud, and the gloom gave the night the feel of March rather than summer. In Blackpool Street nothing stirred, except a dim flickering light in the window of Number 75. A flickering that became a flame, which became an inferno. The alarm was raised, the fire brigade arrived, and when eventually they broke through into the house, they discovered far more than a domestic house fire. They discovered a crime scene.
