The Style Adjacent Podcast
Chicano artist, muralist and activist Fabian Debora is a shining example of channeling pain into purpose. Born to parents who immigrated from Mexico, Fabian’s upbringing was molded through poverty, gang exposure, drug addiction and attempted suicide. His story could have ended before it began. But in a pivotal moment of vulnerability, Fabian entered recovery and it changed his life. He went through the intervention program at a growing organization called Homeboy Industries. Under the guidance of Father Greg Boyle, aka Father G, Fabian became a substance abuse counselor and began re-connecting with the love that kept him safe throughout his traumatic young life-art. After exploring the medium through art mentoring and program development, he went back to Father G and founded Homeboy Art Academy, where various art mediums are woven into a trauma-informed curriculum to help students re-connect with their roots and culture, re identify through healing, and re-imagine a future for themselves through training and employment in the arts sector. Fabian also encountered incredible personal success with his art. Gathering numerous accolades including the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship, Fabian exhibited his most commercially successful exhibit to date, Love Letters in 2024. Love Letters is an incredibly personal and socially focused art series that touches on the human condition, forgiveness and redemption, and the overarching impact incarceration has on the journey through these concepts. With an accompanying book and short film, Love Letters continues to be impactful to viewers around the world, with his exhibit recently showing in Mexico. Fat forward to his more recent collection, Cara de Vago. Partnering in spirit with 17th century artist Caravaggio, Fabian unites the spiritual and religious common threads that “weave our relationship to one another for a conversation as brothers and sisters navigating this journey of life and self-exploration.” TSA listeners, it is a great honor and pleasure to introduce acclaimed artist, muralist, activist and my boss, Fabian Debora. Thank you for listening and remember, when it comes to style, it's ALL adjacent.
