Ep 1.1: Udder Health – Drying Off (Part 1) (Re-release)

Ep 1: Udder Health – Drying Off (Part 1) (Re-release) With the drying-off season fast approaching — and all the challenges it brings — we’re diving back into a previous episode packed with practical insights. Charles chats with Willie Buckley, based in Bandon, Co. Cork, to discuss if farmers in the area are welcoming the transition from the blanket use of antibiotics in cattle to, now, placing careful selection over which cows are to receive antibiotic treatment, as part of the Cell Check Training Program with Animal Health Ireland. Looking overseas, hear Charles also interview New Zealand-based practitioner, Ryan Luckman, CEO of Agvisory.nz, due to the similar challenges the country is facing, alongside Ireland, with block spring calving herds at grass. Following on, Charles and Willie look to critically analyse Ryan's insights, including the confidence he inspires in taking the first few steps towards drastically reducing the use of antibiotic tubes, in order for the process to become the accepted norm, along with his emphasis of the importance of hygiene and technique. Also featured is a discussion between Charles and Maura Langan, Veterinary Advisor and Commercial and Technical Manager at Norbrook, regarding moving away from blanket dry therapy in order to decrease antimicrobial usage.
