Memorial Day

In this episode, learn how Memorial Day began after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” when Americans decorated soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags. The tradition grew from the nation’s grief over the enormous loss of life during the war. Over time, customs such as flying the American flag at half-staff, playing “Taps,” and wearing red poppies became important symbols of remembrance.
