We're Making A Movie: Editing Update

Our feature film, Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, has a first assembly. A first edit. A rough cut. For the first time, all the pieces of the puzzle are on the table and flipped over. The scenes are in order, the story exists, and we can finally start to see the movie we've spent years talking about. Which means it’s the perfect time to check back in with our Director and Editor, Mike Hayhurst. This is Mike's second feature film in the editing bay, and we're excited to talk about what he's learned since his first go-around, what surprises he’s had, and maybe even get a glimpse of what Turns Out might become as the edit continues to take shape. We're Making A Movie: Talking Editing with Brice Beckham

Editing a movie of any size is pure magic. Fight us on it. And nowhere is that magic more apparent than in the fine edit—the moment you stop assembling footage and start truly shaping the story. Performances change. Scenes evolve. Entire emotional arcs can appear out of thin air. It’s wild. To dig deeper into the process, we’re sitting down with industry veteran Brice Beckham. Brice has worn a lot of hats throughout his entertainment career, but this week we’re picking his editor brain. As we begin the post-production journey on Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, we want to understand what really happens when a movie starts becoming THE movie. Brice Beckham has been in the entertainment industry for over 40 of his 50 years, gaining notoriety early in his role as Wesley on the ‘80s series Mr. Belvedere. Since moving behind the camera, he has written, produced, edited, designed, and animated for clients, brands, and networks such as Breaking Bad, Eric Clapton, Volvo, Audi, Subway, Kraft, VH1, AMC, IFC, and countless others. Coming from a documentary background but with hands-on experience in narrative filmmaking, Daniel lives in the realm of taking all of the footage, performances, and chaos from production and shaping it into something that actually works on screen. We’re taking a look at the editing process from his perspective- how he approaches building a story in post, and what filmmakers should be thinking about before they ever hand footage over to an editor. Because at the end of the day, you can shoot everything in the world… but it’s in the edit where the film really comes to life. We're Making A Movie: Moving Into Post-Production

We’re officially wrapping up the production chapter of this filmmaking podcast and diving headfirst into post-production research. Now that the movie is “in the can,” what’s next? When will it be ready? What is taking so long??? Well, turns out, getting the green light can take years, filming happens in the blink of an eye, but post-production takes for-ev-er! (Okay, maybe not… but it certainly feels that way.) Your movie has to go to a lot of different departments before it’s ready to be seen by the world. Color-grading, sound mixing, title sequences… just to name a few. There is a long list of people who put their creative mark on the project in these final stages.
