Title: The Epidemic Subtitle: A Collision of Power, Privilege, and Public Health Author: David DeKok Narrator: Eddie Frierson Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 12 mins Language: English Release date: 01-19-18 Publisher: David DeKok Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers Publisher's Summary: The Epidemic tells the true story one of the last and worst typhoid epidemics in America, occurring in the early winter of 1903 in Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University. At least 85 people died in the epidemic, including 29 Cornell students. More than 10 percent of Ithaca's 13,000 citizens contracted typhoid, mostly from drinking the town's water. As a prosperous university town, Ithaca had more doctors than anywhere in New York state outside of Manhattan, but that was of little help. There was no real cure. You suffered for three weeks and either died horribly or got better, but even survivors could be left physically ruined and financially destitute. Typhoid was nearing the end of a long run as a worldwide killer of rich and poor alike, but that end - brought about in the 20th century by water chlorination and antibiotics - would not come soon enough for Ithaca. Written as a nonfiction medical thriller, The Epidemic traces the outbreak to William T. Morris' acquisition of Ithaca Water Works in 1902 from the wealthy and prominent Treman family in Ithaca. He paid too much for the water company, in part because he wanted to move his business operations to Ithaca so he could live near his close friend, Ebenezer M. Treman. The deal was rejected by Wall Street banks, but Cornell University - whose board was controlled by Morris' friends - came through with enough financing to close the deal. Forced to raise revenue and cut costs, Morris decided to build a new dam and reservoir on Six Mile Creek above Ithaca. Some of the workers he hired brought the typhoid to Ithaca. The Epidemic details Ithaca's existential struggle to survive, examining medical procedures of the era, how the epidemic was finally broken, and who the heroes and villains were. Cornell students took matters into their own hands, demanding that the university provide clean bottled water. This story was a tragedy, but the listener will find many sparks of hope and goodness.

Condition Book One Audiobook by Alec Birri

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/128/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/128/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Condition Book One Subtitle: A Medical Miracle? Author: Alec Birri Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 32 mins Language: English Release date: 01-17-18 Publisher: Essential Music Limited Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers Publisher's Summary: The first in a dystopian trilogy based on the author's command of a top secret government unit. What if all brain disorders were treatable? Few would lament the passing of dementia or autism, but what if the twisted mind of a sex offender or murderer could be cured too? Or how about a terrorist or maybe a political extremist? What if we could all be "corrected"? It's 1966, and RAF pilot Dan Stewart awakes from a coma following an aircraft accident into a world where nothing seems to make sense anymore. Not being able to recall the crash might be expected, but what about the rest of his life? And what's stopping him from taking his medication? Is it brain damage that's causing paranoia about the red pill, or is Dan right to think something sinister is going on? His horrific injuries don't make any sense either - a post-crash fire caused him to suffer almost 100% burns. How is it even possible to survive that? Are the hallucinations and strange dreams trying to tell him something? They are, and he'll soon find out what, but not before his doctor's sure the shock won't kill him. Members Reviews: Kept me Guessing I liked this book quite a bit. I almost quit reading after the first chapter, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out, it took a different turn. I like when books do that. Looking forward to Book Two. Realistically scary A great read with a lot of scenarios that could become true. This book will make you wonder about medicine today, and not in a good way. Five Stars A well-written thriller, that leaves you wondering just how close to the truth it might run. Very engaging read. Pretty weird, but good A bit confusing at first but you soon start to figure out what is happening. And then realize you were wrong about that too, as the story has several satisfying twists and turns. Five Stars Perfect!! Arrived quickly. Very satisfied with purchase.

Title: Genome Subtitle: The Extinction Files, Book 2 Author: A. G. Riddle Narrator: Edoardo Ballerini Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs Language: English Release date: 01-09-18 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 199 votes Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers Publisher's Summary: The thrilling conclusion to The Extinction Files is finally here! A code hidden in the human genome...will reveal the ultimate secret of human existence. And could hold humanity's only hope of survival. In 2003, the first human genome was sequenced. But the secrets it held were never revealed. The truth was discovered 30 years ago, almost by accident. Dr. Paul Kraus had spent his entire career searching for what he called humanity's lost tribes - human ancestors who had gone extinct. When Kraus compared the DNA samples of the lost tribes with our own, he found a pattern of changes: a code. At the time, the technology didn't exist to unravel what it meant. To protect the secret, Kraus hid his work and disappeared. Now the technology exists to finally understand the mysterious code buried in the human genome, but finding the pieces of Kraus' research is more dangerous than anyone imagined. Dr. Peyton Shaw and her mother have obtained part of Kraus' research - and a cryptic message that could lead to the remaining pieces. They believe his work is the key to stopping a global conspiracy - and an event that will change humanity forever. The ultimate secret, buried in the human genome, will change our very understanding of what it means to be human. For Peyton, finding it may come at an incredible price. She must weigh the lives of strangers against those she loves: Desmond Hughes and her mother. With time running out, Peyton makes a fateful choice - one that can never be undone. Members Reviews: Exciting and interesting, but confusing and weird Although this is a pretty exciting and interesting story, there are several problems that get in the way of interest. First, there are the myriad chapter jumps from character to character and from time to time with no clues. It is very confusing trying to figure out if a given chapter is happening now or some time in the past. And there is a LOT of past here, more than 50 years of it, and we have to keep those pasts straight for so many people. Stalingrad, Australia, Oklahoma, Germany, Spain, the North Atlantic. Now, last year, 5 years ago, 50 years ago, a billion years ago. I lost my place in the book once when my phone kept playing after I had put it down. It took me over half an hour, and a lot of relistening to figure out where I had been. THAT is a confusing story. This has sort of mixed up genres. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. This one started out (in book 1) as a biological pandemic which then turned out to be a Lex Luther bioterrorism theme but now there's Virtual Reality and computer-controlled everything. This current volume takes it even further into VR and super computers. It's already confusing trying to figure out how their computer programs can do what they say they can, and then you have to understand how the Neanderthal cave paintings fit in (?), and then it just keeps getting weirder. Something is hidden in the human genome and it is supposed to answer the deepest questions of Man's existence. What's that question again? And where in the story, or Lin Shaw's genetic research, was this answered? Not much is answered because the question isn't clear. Most of the themes have been dealt with anyway in Star Trek in far less time and with less confusion. It's a bit sci-fi.

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/128/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/128/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The God Gene Subtitle: A Novel Author: F. Paul Wilson Narrator: Hillary Huber Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 24 mins Language: English Release date: 01-02-18 Publisher: Macmillan Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 17 votes Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers Publisher's Summary: Rick Hayden and Laura Fanning of Panacea return to encounter another mindbending scientific scenario in The God Gene, a new thriller audiobook by F. Paul Wilson. Rick's brother, Keith, a prominent zoologist at NYU, walks out of his office one day and disappears. The only clue they have are his brother's book, which mentions "the God Gene". A million or so years ago, a gene designated hsa-mir-3998 appeared as if by magic from the junk DNA of the hominids who eventually evolved into Homo sapiens. It became a key player in brain development - specifically creativity - and laymen started calling it "the God Gene". Keith had been tracking this gene through the evolutionary tree, and was excited by an odd blue-eyed primate he brought back from East Africa. But immediately after running the creature's genetic code, he destroyed all the results and vanished. Rick and Laura's search takes them to an uncharted island in the Mozambique Channel, home of the dapis - blue-eyed primates whose DNA hides a world-shattering secret. In a globe-spanning mixture of science, mystery and adventure, The God Gene takes listeners to the edge of evolutionary theory and beyond...way beyond. Members Reviews: Imaginative Good narration, unusual story. I am always a little disappointed when religion sneaks in without warning. You would have to be sensitive to be bothered by this, but it is an attack on evolution. The ending is clear very early on.
