Title: Eugenics and Other Evils Author: G. K. Chesterton Narrator: Derek Perkins Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 50 mins Language: English Release date: 01-23-18 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: During the first three decades of the 20th century, eugenics, the scientific control of human breeding, was a popular cause within enlightened and progressive segments of the English-speaking world. The New York Times eagerly supported it, gushing about the wonderful "new science." Prominent scientists, such as the plant biologist Luther Burbank, were among its most enthusiastic supporters. And the Carnegie and Rockefeller foundations generously funded eugenic research intended to distinguish the "fit" from the "unfit." This prophetic volume counters the intellectual nihilism of Nietzsche, while simultaneously rebuking Western notions of progress - biological or otherwise. Chesterton expands his criticism of eugenics into what he calls "a more general criticism of the modern craze for scientific officialism and strict social organization." Members Reviews: history repeats itself; old book worth reading! same thing is going on today! finding this and ordering it did what i wanted it to do :-p Chesterton was an authentic genius Chesterton was the best, especially when attacking a monstrous evil like eugenics. Anything he wrote is worth reading. Hillary receive the M Sanger Eugenics award. Eugenics is an evil concept that has great appeal to despotic leaders and governments. Beyond its time This book will jolt you awake. Is it better to be in a bad prison or a good prison? I ask you. Five Stars Great Price & Quick Shipping. Highly Recommend. A+++++++

Woman and Her Secret Passions Audiobook by Dr. Robert Wakely

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Woman and Her Secret Passions Subtitle: Expanded Author: Dr. Robert Wakely Narrator: Brian V. Hunt Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 12-22-17 Publisher: Click Shock LLC Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: As a historical document, this audiobook is far more entertaining than it has a right to be. It's a wonderful, funny, sad peek into the emotional agonies of a sexual era that is happily past. Or is it? You won't know quite whether to laugh, cry, or thank Dr. Wakely for his almost criminally Victorian little 1846 book whose original, full title is: "Woman and Her Secret Passions Containing an Exact Description of the Female Organs of Generation, Their Uses and Abuses, Together with a Detailed Account of the Causes and the Cure of the Solitary Vice". If that doesn't have you panting breathlessly, some of the good doctor's rather indiscreet patient stories will. Masturbation is the evil he seeks to cure, and based on the original cover, you'd be forgiven for assuming it was a best seller. We don't know. Despite stating that it was "for sale by all booksellers", one wonders who would have the nerve to make such a purchase in 1846. Men could have purchased it for the racy stories, and when you first dive in, you might think it was written for precisely that purpose. But Doc Wakely should be given at least the credit for recognizing that the clitoris exists, that it was the "seat of female pleasure" (if parenthetically he felt it was only that when coupled in blissful matrimony), and that he does not condemn female pleasure outright. He does give a fairly good account of the uses of the "female organs of generation", but the abuses he blames for all manner of physical, emotional, and psychological ills. In men, he is certain beyond doubt that masturbation leads to IMPOTENCE (his capitalization). He tells young women not to lie in bed until late morning "...because of the fatal habits to which it sometimes gives rise, and which it fosters to a most alarming degree." Of a pair of fun-loving newlyweds, he remarks upon their reaching a point of asexual relations: "For a few days they enjoyed great pleasure, but as they continued this course week after week, they exhausted the flame of pleasure. To speak plain English, they wasted their seminal fluid too lavishly - they drained their bodies of that precious liquid, which is the cause of beauty, youth, and love." Of another patient whom he examines, he states, "I also discovered that she was finely formed for giving the highest pleasure to a companion equally amorous with herself." Oh doctor!

A Defense of Calvinism Audiobook by Charles Spurgeon

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: A Defense of Calvinism Author: Charles Spurgeon Narrator: Bryan Nyman Format: Unabridged Length: 37 mins Language: English Release date: 12-22-17 Publisher: Audio Sommelier Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: "The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach to-day, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again." (C. H. Spurgeon) A Defense of Calvinism is a classic text by Charles H. Spurgeon. This rendition is beautifully narrated by Bryan Nyman. Members Reviews: Not Convinced I found this work unconvincing and remain aligned with the Arminianism of John Wesley. Interestingly, Spurgeon says of Wesley, "while I detest many of the doctrines which he preached, yet for the man himself I have a reverence second to no Wesleyan;" Spurgeon, Charles H.. A Defense of Calvinism (Kindle Locations 182-183). . Kindle Edition. A real modern classic! Fast reading but full of ... A real modern classic! Fast reading but full of TRUTH. He validates his position well and is convincing in what he sees as Biblical truth and heresy. It is a helpful tool for pastors to use as quick sermon reference or illustration for what the Gospel really says and means. His one liners are powerful to quote in any bible study, classroom or sermon to be preached. The truth is in it all over the place with lots of references to dig deeper in your studies. Passionate, appealing Spurgeon's defense is a passionate appeal to emotion for the correctness of the doctrine of election. It's weak if one is looking for iron clad scriptural support however. In fairness we need to remember that this was the style of the day, and I suspect it was much better received in its day than it appears in today's very clinical settings. The modern reader - like me - might find it a bit thin based on scriptural or logical evaluation. Over all, however, it is a pleasant read. Even if it is unlikely to convince a dedicated Arminian. Calvinism defended Spurgeon is very clear in his delineation of the reasons as why he believes in the doctrines of Grace. A good read for those who are caught in the middle of the Calvinism/Arminian debate and need someone to clearly state the Reformed view. Spurgeon is quite the apologist in this brief writing. Solid Convincing Defense of Calvinism A strong, concise defense of the Biblical doctrine of election through a conversational treatise of biblical and philosophical considerations. Definitely, a worthwhile read.

Economic Consequences of the Peace Audiobook by John Maynard Keynes

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ [https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/] to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Economic Consequences of the Peace Author: John Maynard Keynes Narrator: Robert Bethune Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 58 mins Language: English Release date: 12-20-17 Publisher: Freshwater Seas Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: John Maynard Keynes died in 1946, but his name is still one to conjure with in economics and politics worldwide. Although his contributions to economic theory established and maintain his fame, he also - particularly at the time in his life when he wrote the present book, Economic Consequences of the Peace - showed a flair for practical political work on the basis of economics in his work with the Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance. At the outbreak of World War I, he began working with the British Treasury; in January 1915 he took up an official position there. At the end of the war he was appointed as the British Treasury's representative to the Versailles Peace Conference. His experiences at the Conference formed the basis of this book. In short, he was so disgusted with the resulting treaty that he resigned his post. This is not a theoretical text. It is a data-driven study of the consequences that must follow if the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles were put into full effect. To the extent that they were, Keynes was largely proven right; to the extent that they were ignored, delayed, or abrogated altogether, Keynes was also proven right: such measures were never put in practice because they were impossible. Beyond practical economics and politics, his book is also a clear call for intelligent magnanimity in politics, both in peace and in war. His vision is of a world at peace in which the prosperity of each nation contributes to the prosperity of all people. He clearly demonstrates the practical working of that vision in his analysis of the disasters that would happen if the effort to rebuild war-torn Europe proceeded on a punitive basis versus the positive results of proceeding on a basis not of enmity, but of equity. In order to avoid forcing the listener to listen to long recitations of numeric tables, there are small abridgements at a few points in the book. However, no substantial text has been removed and Keynes' arguments and methods of analysis remain intact. This is economics; there are some places where the numerical facts get a little dense, but Keynes succeeds in keeping his argument clear even when the going gets heavy. Enjoy! Members Reviews: Essential Readings for the 20th Century There are a number of surprises throughout this extended essay making it worth your attention. Keynes, still in his thirties, deconstructs the allied treaty at Versailles following the victory over Germany in World War I. His primary criticisms are that the Treaty is vengeful, unfair, and pays little attention to the economic consequences of its terms. At times Keynes is poetic: he is writing in the "dead season of our fortunes" [1919]. His words are urgent, because this Treaty has "destructive significance". It is morbidly prophetic: "If we aim deliberately at this impoverishment of Central Europe, vengeance...will not limp." Keynes' Dickensian sketches of the key Allied players, the UK's Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, France's Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau and the U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson are vivid and devastating. Keynes' "Economic Consequences" is worth reading for these alone. How different a picture of President Wilson we get from Keynes versus what we read in middle school history.

The Captive Mind Audiobook by Czeslaw Milosz, Jane Zielonko - translator, Claire Bloom - director

Title: The Captive Mind Author: Czeslaw Milosz, Jane Zielonko - translator, Claire Bloom - director Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs Language: English Release date: 11-28-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: The best-known prose work by the winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature examines the moral and intellectual conflicts faced by men and women living under totalitarianism of the left or right. Written in the early 1950s, when Eastern Europe was in the grip of Stalinism and many Western intellectuals placed their hopes in the new order of the East, this classic work reveals in fascinating detail the often beguiling allure of totalitarian rule to people of all political beliefs and its frightening effects on the minds of those who embrace it. Members Reviews: An Intriguing Read This book is an amalgam of a memoir and a satire artistically blended with a few fictionalized examples to describe the malleability of human mind vulnerable to unsolicited forces of the political order. The gist of this book is best summarized by the quotes below. "Let us admit that man is no more than an instrument in an orchestra directed by the muse of History. It is only in this context that the notes he produces have any significance. Otherwise even his most brilliant solos become simply a highbrow's of diversions." "All the concepts men live by are a product of the historic formation in which they find themselves. Fluidity and constant change are the characteristics of phenomena. And man is so plastic a being that one can even conceive of the day when a thoroughly self-respecting citizen will crawl about on all fours, sporting a tail of brightly colored feathers as a sign of conformity to the order he lives in" The author presents this fragility of human existence (and their mind) with a collection of fictionalized stories of four men who succumb to the forces of changing political landscape, more or less consciously becoming victims of a historic situation. The book, although written in 20th century around the context of WWII is still relevant today to enrich one's understanding of multiple facets of existing world order. This is a most interesting first-person account of how intelligent people can talk themselves into acceptance of undemocratic political ... This is a most interesting first-person account of how intelligent people can talk themselves into acceptance of undemocratic political systems, written by a Nobel laureate who lived through WWII and the early years of Soviet domination in Poland. The Primodial Soup of the Current Russian Evolution I wish I could put this in the hands of every American and Russian. Milosz wrote this during the end of the World War as the Soviet Union spread it's authoritarian version of communism to the Eastern Europe. This book is scathing and humorous in it's treatment of that failed regime. He describes through personal experience, not only how liberals and progressives avoided the cultural police and gulags, but perhaps even more valuable, how his "comrades" changed to become part of this authoritarianism. I cannot recommend this book high enough for anyone who has read Godfather of the Kremlin, or Putin's Kleptocracy. This book covers the very beginning of the sort of regime Putin would seem to resurrect in the name of Empire and God. Milosz saw the worst and lived to tell the story. Czeslaw Milosz lived through "interesting times". Educated in the 1920s in Lithuania, he lived in Poland at the time of the invasion of the Nazi armies in 1939.
