Triggator 101: The Triangle That Changes Everything

Have you ever checked your bank account on a random Tuesday and felt that quiet panic — the balance is lower than expected and you're not sure where the money went? You're not alone. And today, we fix that. In this episode, we go back to the foundation — the Triggator Triangle. Budget, Save, Pay Off Debt isn't a checklist you run through once. It's a rhythm. A framework you return to every single paycheck. Whether you've been with the show since Episode 1 or this is your first time here, today gives you something you can act on before your next paycheck hits. We break down what it actually means to give every dollar a job before you spend a single one, why saving isn't just a number in an account but a four-part strategy, and how to eliminate debt intentionally — not with guilt or panic, but with a real plan that fits your real life. In This Episode: * Why a Paycheck Spending Plan works when a monthly budget doesn't * Why "budget" is a verb at Triggator — not a noun * The power of giving first — and why it changes everything * How to build your Paycheck Spending Plan in three questions * The diet metaphor that reframes your entire financial mindset * The four Peace of Mind Funds — Emergency, Alligator, Fun, and Retirement * The Emergency Fund Ladder — from $500 to six months of expenses * What alligator expenses are and why they're not emergencies * The Fun Fund — saving for joy instead of borrowing for it * Why retirement savings should work exactly like taxes * Snowball, Avalanche, and Custom debt payoff strategies explained * The Snowflake — why every extra dollar counts * What debt-free actually feels like on the other side Timestamps: 0:00 — Open 0:33 — Intro 2:33 — Budget by Paycheck: Give Every Dollar a Job 14:58 — Save With Purpose: The Four Jobs Your Money Needs to Do 26:31 — Eliminate Debt Intentionally: Your Plan, Your Order, Your Freedom 34:27 — Wrap-Up Free Resources Mentioned: 📘 Money Made Manageable — Free Ebook: https://triggator.com/ebook [https://triggator.com/ebook] 📲 Start Your Free Triggator Trial (no card required): https://triggator.com [https://triggator.com] ▶️ Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/JkPDLy7Yr_A [https://youtu.be/JkPDLy7Yr_A] 🎙️ Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/master-your-money-budgeting-saving-and-debt-free-living/id1810181570 [https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/master-your-money-budgeting-saving-and-debt-free-living/id1810181570] 🎙️ Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6AAOBGjPNjUyDtUSzxuR1v?si=853073c88fc94b04 [https://open.spotify.com/show/6AAOBGjPNjUyDtUSzxuR1v?si=853073c88fc94b04] 🌐 Triggator.com: https://triggator.com [https://triggator.com] Connect With Nate: Have a question about the Triangle? Free Money First: Master Your Employer Benefits

Most people negotiate their salary and never think twice about what comes after. But tucked inside your benefits package is a second paycheck — one that doesn't require a side hustle, a budget overhaul, or a perfect financial situation. It just requires you to say yes. In Episode 100 of Master Your Money, Nate breaks down three areas where employees consistently leave money on the table — and exactly what to do about it today. The 401(k) Match — The Raise You Never Negotiated The most common employer match puts free money into your retirement account every single paycheck — but only if you contribute enough to claim it. Nate walks through the real cost of waiting, using two people with identical salaries, raises, and employers. The only difference? One starts at 30, the other at 31. That single year of delay costs nearly $442,000 by retirement — and in that final year alone, the portfolio of the person who started earlier grows by roughly $484,000 in a single twelve-month stretch. The mindset shift that makes it all work: treat your 401(k) contribution like taxes. Off the top. Automated. Gone before your Paycheck Spending Plan ever kicks in. Then live your best life on what's left — because what's left is still enough. The HSA — The Triple-Tax Tool Hiding in Plain Sight Most people think of their Health Savings Account as a medical debit card. It's not. The HSA is the only account in the tax code that gives you three tax advantages at once: contributions go in pre-tax, the money grows tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses come out completely tax-free. And after age 65, you can withdraw for any reason — making it a stealth retirement account if you never need it for healthcare. Nate covers the 2026 contribution limits ($4,400 individual / $8,750 family), the employer contributions many people don't know they're entitled to, and why the HSA is better understood as a dedicated healthcare wealth fund than a spending account. The longer you let it grow, the more powerful it becomes — especially as medical costs rise with age. The Rest of Your Benefits — Free Money You Haven't Claimed Yet Your benefits package doesn't stop at the 401(k) and HSA. Nate walks through the perks most employees scroll past — and none of them require open enrollment to claim today: * ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan): Contribute each paycheck and buy company stock at a 15% discount, with your purchase price locked in at the start of the offering period. Nate shares his own story of using his ESPP to fully fund his Alligator Fund from zero — turning a workplace perk into a financial system launch pad. * Tuition Assistance: Your employer will pay you to get smarter. The IRS allows up to $5,250 per year in tax-free educational assistance — and many employers follow a raise or certification bump once you finish. That's your employer giving you money to learn so they can pay you more when you're done. * Employee Discounts: Before you book a hotel, pay your cell phone bill, buy electronics, or run your car through a wash — check your employee discount portal. These programs cover far more than most people realize, and every dollar saved on something you were already buying stays in your Paycheck Spending Plan. * EAP (Employee Assistance Program): Free counseling, financial planning consultations, legal referrals, and more — already paid for by your employer, available right now, and used by only 6% of eligible employees annually. Don't be in the 94%. The Challenge If you haven't started your 401(k) contributions yet — stop right now and do it. Not tonight. Now. If you're already capturing your full match, open your benefits portal and find one discount that applies to something already in your Paycheck Spending Plan. Claim it today. The Sneaky Money Leaks You’re Not Watching

Fads vs. Fundamentals: How to Filter Money Advice

Modern money advice is louder, faster, and more confident than ever—but not all of it leads to peace of mind. In this episode, Nate Tanner breaks down why so much popular financial advice feels good in the moment yet quietly undermines progress over time.\n\nUsing relatable stories, pop culture moments (like The Karate Kid’s “wax on, wax off,” Seinfeld’s stock tip spiral, and The Simpsons monorail), and real-world examples, Nate introduces a simple five-question filter you can apply to any money advice before you follow it. You’ll learn how to evaluate incentives, evidence, timeframe, risk, and repeatability—so you stop chasing vibes and start choosing outcomes.\n\nThe episode anchors everything back to the Triggator Triangle—Budget, Save, Pay Off Debt—and shows how fundamentals like a Paycheck Spending Plan, Peace of Mind Funds (including your Alligator Plan), and consistent debt payoff outperform trends every time. Nate also walks popular money fads like Buy Now, Pay Later, credit card points, and “one perfect investment” pitches through the Triangle to reveal their hidden costs.\n\nYou’ll leave with a clear framework for filtering financial noise, a practical 15-minute Fundamentals Reset you can do this week, and renewed confidence that boring systems—not flashy hacks—are what actually create financial calm and long-term progress.

Stop the Bleeding: A No New Debt Recovery Plan

Debt stress can feel like a financial emergency—and when that happens, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s stabilization. In this episode, Nate Tanner walks through a calm, practical recovery plan focused on stopping the bleeding before real progress can begin. You’ll learn how to inventory your debts without shame, choose a payoff strategy that fits your personality (snowball, avalanche, or custom), and automate progress so momentum doesn’t rely on willpower. Nate also explains why calling your creditors can be one of the fastest ways to lower pressure, reduce interest costs, and regain breathing room. Most importantly, this episode reinforces a core Triggator principle: personal debt is not a spending tool. Using medical and pop culture analogies, Nate shows why stopping new debt and putting permanent guardrails in place is what protects your paycheck, restores clarity, and sets the stage for long-term freedom. If your finances feel like they’re hemorrhaging, this episode gives you first aid—steady steps you can take this week to regain control, confidence, and peace of mind.
