Our Surprise Guest: Marriam Mossalli

I’d like to introduce the surprise guest, Marriam Mossalli. She started off her career working in Journalism and content development. From that point, she started her own communication consulting firm called Niche Arabia in 2011. The firm works with the biggest brands in fashion and luxury from Fendi, Prada, and Cartier. Her goal was to help these brands penetrate the Saudi Market even further by knowing and catering to the Saudi consumer. In addition to this, throughout her career, she has been working on Under the Abaya, a non-profit initiative that promotes women empowerment through academic scholarships awarded from 100% of the proceeds of book sales. She also launched Saudi Style Council in 2019, a non-for-profit trade association that works as the facilitator for the emerging fashion sector in the Kingdom. The goal of the council is to become the reference point toward international standards. Today, Marriam and I discuss her relationship with Instagram, women influencers in the Arab world, social responsibility, and also delve into her journey with Under the Abaya.

The national public image of Saudi women is being modernized by micro-Saudi women influencers involved in the Instagram platform. I find that these women’s engagement is having an impact on younger Saudi women and challenging traditional values and norms and performing a vanguard role in reimagining the public national image of Saudi women today. Sarah Almaddah is a 24-year-old young woman. She is an architect, artist based in Saudi Arabia. She graduated from the American University of Sharjah with a bachelor's degree in architecture. She is also a practicing freelance artist and potter. She discusses her relationship with Instagram.

Madawi Balushi is a 19-year-old young adult currently majoring in environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis. She is also a micro-influencer sharing her life on Instagram and YouTube. Today we’re going to discuss her journey with social media.

The national public image of Saudi women is being modernized by micro-Saudi women influencers involved in the Instagram platform. I find that these women’s engagement is having an impact on younger Saudi women and challenging traditional values and norms and performing a vanguard role in reimagining the public national image of Saudi women today. Batool Abduslam, a 17-year-old teenage woman. Batool has a Palestinian background but grew up here in Saudi with me. I’d say she is growing to become a successful micro-influencer. An important thing to note here is that she under the eyes of hundreds of Saudi Arabian followers.

To gain an insight into the power dynamic in Saudi and how the pressure it exerts plays out in the Instagram space, I am interviewing three different age groups. Alhanouf a 20-year-old young adult woman studying at the American University of Sharjah tells us about how she has adapted to her Instagram space.
