When “I’m Fine” Is Not the Truth: Understanding Fawn Mode
Have you ever said, “I’m fine,” when you were not fine at all?
Maybe you said it to keep the peace, avoid conflict, prevent someone from being disappointed, or protect the relationship. On the outside, you looked calm, agreeable, helpful, and easygoing. But inside, you felt hurt, overwhelmed, resentful, lonely, unseen, or afraid to tell the truth.
In this episode of The Courageous and Confident Christian Mom Podcast, Marci Owen teaches about fawn mode, people-pleasing, self-abandonment, and the fear of losing connection. Fawn mode is a nervous system response that can cause you to say yes when you mean no, hide your true feelings, avoid hard conversations, ignore your own needs, and prioritize everyone else’s comfort over your own truth.
For many women, especially in motherhood, marriage, family relationships, and Christian living, “I’m fine” becomes a protective pattern. It may look like patience, kindness, flexibility, or keeping the peace, but underneath it may be fear: If I tell the truth, will I still be loved?
Marci helps you understand why your body may know the truth before your mouth can say it, how people-pleasing creates resentment and emotional disconnection, and why self-abandonment is not the price of love. You’ll learn how to recognize when “I’m fine” is not honesty but protection, and how to begin coming home to yourself with compassion, emotional honesty, and self-respect.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
* What fawn mode is and how it shows up in relationships
* Why people-pleasing can be a nervous system response
* How saying “I’m fine” can become a protective pattern
* Why self-abandonment creates resentment and emotional exhaustion
* How fear of conflict and fear of rejection affect communication
* How to tell the truth to yourself before speaking it out loud
* How to be loving, kind, faithful, and honest without disappearing
If you have ever struggled with people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, emotional honesty, boundaries, resentment, or saying yes when you mean no, this episode will help you understand yourself with more compassion and begin listening to the truth inside of you.
You do not have to disappear to be loved. You can be kind and honest. You can be faithful and clear. You can keep connection without abandoning yourself.
