By not wanting someone to go unseen, unheard, and seemingly helpless we take on more for them so they can be happy. But constantly taking on other's responsibilities and not asking for help in return is stressing you out. You're not overwhelmed because you have too much to do, you're overwhelmed because you keep saying yes to things your nervous system can't handle. Taking on more and more isn't doing anything but causing you doom scrolling behavior to look more inviting because what do you mean I've already worked 8 hours and I'm not even halfway through my own project much less two of oy co-workers?! Being able to say NO is not a luxury. Being able to politely say no AND KEEP THE BOUNDARY is 100% necessary in keeping your physical, mental, and emotional sanity. No is not a bad word. It absolutely helps us stay healthy. When we find the people who support us, they don't take the word "no" offensively. They appreciate your honesty and willingness to help them when you are absolutely capable of doing so. You always tell yourself you are going to be better, more consistent, more "on top of it", You're simply going to be better than you were yesterday or last week. Then the time comes for you to do it... And you don't. Something comes up that takes your focus away or maybe even, you just feel totally overwhelmed with what you've set up for yourself. So you don't follow through. That failure to follow through causes you to not trust yourself in just about every other area of your life. And when you don't trust yourself, you don't believe in yourself. And if you don't believe in yourself, it's hard to feel confident in yourself and all the skills you've gained, worked hard for and honed to perfection. In order to trust yourself again, you have to show up and be reliable for you and your goals and dreams just like you show up for the loved ones in your life. Regardless of if anyone else "gets it", agrees with it, or champions it for you. You have to stand up for you and make you the priority to regain your own trust and self-worth. The more we mentally and verbally punish ourselves for our quick fixes not working, not getting ourselves moving, not getting our list done, the more we shutdown, then the more we feel guilt and shame because WE KNOW BETTER. Instead, let's break this cycle in 5 easy steps. 1 Catch it Early- notice the beginning stages and feelings of overwhelm 2 Shrink the focus - bring your list of 10 things that need to get done and only focus on one for a manageable block of time 3 Replace the guilt with data - what was the final thing that made me feel overwhelmed, aka - the straw that broke the camels back 4 Built softer consistency - complete small repeatable actions that build consistency rather than one day of dramatic resets 5 STOP trying to earn rest - Allow yourself time to relax, celebrate, ground, and be happy. Take the small rests now instead of a complete burnout rest that gets us back to the same "stuck" place. WE ALL DO IT! We all downgrade our accomplishments, downgrade our beauty (internal and external) play down all the great things about us and every thing we do. Self deprecation is a nasty tool we use to keep ourselves down. Negative self-talk is the umbrella under which self-deprecation stands. We talk bad about ourselves so that when someone else does it, it doesn't hurt as much, because no one can hurt me as bad as. i hurt myself, right? I've said it before, YOU ARE NOT LAZY. You never were. The issue is, you talk yourself into this state of laziness because of past experiences. You have to make the choice TODAY to learn from the past to move forward.
