In this bonus episode, Julia and co-host Rique, our new friend we met at a BLM protest in Colorado Springs, discuss The End of Policing as a response to police brutality and racial equality. Too often, white people refuse to let Black Americans lead the discussion on issues of race. That has to end. "Defund the police" means fewer police antagonizing communities of color and more money directed to education and community initiatives. Police should not be the primary point of contact for the homeless or mentally ill. Prostitution and drugs should be legal. Other topics include the school-to-prison pipeline, the War on Drugs and the new Jim Crow era (see Michelle Alexander's incredible book), 13th on Netflix, and the racist, violent history of police in America. Sasha and Julia discuss Aron Ralston's incredible memoir about cutting off his right arm, which had been trapped by an 800-pound chockstone in Blue John Canyon in Canyonlands National Park, to save his life in 2003. The book is marvelously written with vivid imagery, harrowing adventures, and haunting spiritual experiences. It's one of Sasha's major influences. She might not be a rock climber and snowboarder moving to Colorado without it. And it serves to remind Julia of how tragically short life is and that we should spend our precious time doing something worthwhile. Additional topics include: pOoP, watching the Hills, HaNd SaNiTiZeR, Julia's TIPI, Sasha's fire starters, Chris McCandless, Sasha's OWN MULTITOOL RESCUE STORY, Johnny Kapahala, and MORE.
