7. Amy Albright: yes, it's a woman doing comedy

When I started the comedy course run by Phil Smith and Fran Garrity [https://mickkarma.substack.com/p/podcast-chatting-with-fran-garrity], I met lots of great people. But someone who seemed to be way ahead of the rest of us very early on (I think we managed to level up later) was Amy Albright. Now, we’ve done gigs together, I’ve been on the Too Grand open mic, and we’ve chatted socially, but I’ve not managed to get her onto the podcast so far. Until now! Amy chats about a few things, from that course that kicked it all off to a pub landlord who openly stated "I don't like women comedians." Mate, it’s 2024. Also, that would have been archaic in 1994. 5. My first comedy script, The Riding Officer

While I’ve only been doing comedy for a few months, I’ve been writing funny stuff for years. Very little of it has been produced. In fact, the closest I’ve been to having comedy produced is talking bollocks on podcasts. Which brings us to this week’s show. (There is an alternative version of that setup, with the punch “…is making love to my wife” but I felt that was unfair on her as much as it is me. My jokes have to a) punch up, b) be about me, or c) have a self-deprecating punchline.) In this week’s Mic Time, I update you on some recent trips to Manchester, a cancelled trip to West Yorkshire, and unearth a performance by some actual actors of my first sitcom script, The Riding Officer, back in 2012.
