11 Todd Huth. Always Exploring

From the Shelter-in-place studio of Leslie Jackson, welcome to the Leslie show. Todd Huth is the founding guitarist for rock outfits Primus & Porch. He's always chasing his muse, always innovating and exploring the guitar as a tool for creative expression. It's so fun to talk to him about music because he's low-key in spite of his tremendous experience in the hotbed of funk metal hardcore & rock in the mid-1980s. It was really quite a time to be coming of nightclub age in the bay area music scene in the san Francisco Bay Area, and Todd Huth was central to it. It's great to hear that he's still making music with some of the same players who were also at the epicenter of what was like a renaissance. In this interview we talk about early years of Primus, and about family life and his advice for kids, and some practice techniques. We even discuss what time signature dogs drink water in. There is a beautiful acoustic performance of a song Todd wrote called Wildflower. Show notes below will point you to Todd's website. He has a few great instructional videos so you too can play "John the Fisherman [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPPjXkDZuGs]." This show was recorded in Berkeley and Oakland California in May, 2021. website: ToddHuth.com [https://www.toddhuth.com/] Porch is on band camp [https://porch.bandcamp.com/]

Episode 10. Dara Ackerman, Cosmic Go-Go Dancer

Dara Ackerman is a multifaceted and dynamic songwriter/artist, performer and peace educator here in the SF East Bay. We met while sharing the stage at The Monkey House in Berkeley. While I was traveling not long after, she sent me her first album, Skyland, to learn for a show on my return. The album became the perfect soundtrack to my journey into the mountains and beyond. We discuss the unusual way Skyland was made, and her eclectic life's unlikely intersection with the West Oakland rebel indie rock band, Felsen. My interview with Dara takes twists and turns, and is accompanied by cuts from her songs, "Same Planet, Different Universe," and the title track, "Skyland," from her beautiful album. This episode is also a video. In it, Peter is tapping his practice pad while we chat. The video is in The Leslie Show video channel [https://youtu.be/bU2z3JEmXNA]. Episode 8 of the Leslie Show is an interview with drummer and long time friend, Peter Libby. We talk about the band he was playing with when we met in 1983, then called Primate. His early education in drumming with teachers like Donn Spindt of the Roobinoos, and Musicians Institute, in LA. Peter gives us a drumming lesson in phrasing sets of five and seven. Then tells a fabulous story from early in his musical career about doing cartage for studio guitarist Dean Parks. Music: Primus: Les Claypool and Todd Huth.
