In the penultimate episode of this season, I chat to AJ Powell. Based in Japan, he's a retired United States Army Non-Commissioned Officer who served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, and he is a world-travelled American combat veteran. He is a fully qualified aircraft mechanic and technician, flight engineer, instructor, and pilot. He is also a professional/occupational scuba diver, exploration diver, technical diver, and certified dive instructor. AJ is an author, published researcher, guest lecturer, and public speaker. He is a social and political advocate for the veteran’s community as a whole, men's social issues, leadership and growth mindsets, and enjoys opportunities to teach, coach, mentor, and guide others towards self-betterment and success. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and is published academically in the fields of sociology and leadership. During his career, AJ has been blessed with opportunities to work at the local, joint, and multinational levels of operations, working closely with U.S. and allied forces, teams, and organizations, in conducting operations, training, development, and relations-building. This experience has given him valuable insights into cross-cultural relationships, their common difficulties, and what it takes to build successful teams in dynamic environments. Today, AJ uses this knowledge to help and empower international teams to improve performance and achieve success. Aside from his career, AJ has spent his entire adult life striving toward and living out every single childhood dream. He has achieved becoming a pilot, a diver, a writer and author, a scientist and researcher, a teacher and instructor, a biker, run marathons and competed in ultra-distance events, served his nation in uniform, he's a musician, a photographer, a martial artist, a snowboarder, adventure-seeker, and has travelled and lived around the world. He still has yet to make it to space... But maybe one day. AJ believes “investing in experiences” and “investing in relationships” are keys to investing in your future. He is always seeking out new knowledge and new opportunities and believes education and self-betterment are life-long endeavours, and that combining those things with internalized motivation and an optimistic mindset, equals the secret to success. This week I welcome back Rosie Bancroft, she had to come back on and tell me about the most amazing year in Bali. After seeing all her amazing adventures spent in paradise, I couldn't wait to find out all the details. She had an amazing year and tells me about the do's and don'ts and how she managed to make it pay. She also got asked to become an ambassador for the "Girls that Scuba' community. Rosie graduated from the University of Manchester (UoM) with first-class honours in Zoology, where she specialised in conservation, climate change and sustainability. Simultaneously she led a career as an elite athlete for Team GB para-swimming. Rosie then went on to work as one of the leading ambassadors and managers for sport at UoM. In the 12 months since she was last on the podcast, she has become a Divemaster with SSI whilst interning in a marine conservation charity in Indonesia. Currently working as an online marketing manager for several firms around the globe, she's now planning her next adventure! This week I chat with Laney Grant, a newly qualified GUE Fundamentals Diver and Ghost Fishing UK's Fundraising Officer. We initially met when she ordered one of the Fancy a Brew podcast mugs after listening to the episode with @RichWalker. She talks openly about how completing the Global Underwater Explorers' Fundamentals course, gave her the confidence to be in the water more than she had before. After asking her previous instructors how to remain stable and neutral and their only suggestion was to just practice, Laney felt so disillusioned. GUE was formed by Jarrod Jablonski and gained early prominence in association with the success of its well-known Woodville Karst Plain Project (WKPP), which now has the status of a nonprofit affiliate of GUE. Jablonski, the president of GUE, promoted the ideas of "Hogarthian" gear configuration and the "Doing It Right" (DIR) system of diving to a global audience. Following the WKPP's introduction in 1995 of a standardised approach to gear configuration and diving procedures, there was a significant reduction in diving incidents within the Woodville Karst Plain cave system. The standardised approach is the basis of the diver training program of GUE, marking an important difference from the programs of other diver training organisations. GUE also focuses on protecting the maritime environment. The most popular GUE course is GUE Fundamentals, which is designed to introduce the GUE system to non-GUE divers and is the pathway to technical courses. This week I chat with Jessica Irwin,  a military mom, a maritime archaeologist, an environmentalist and explorer. She loves to explore ideas, places, and new ways of doing things. She says "I am an archaeologist but that doesn't mean I just dig in the dirt. I also dive under the water, visit archives, and write. I look at cultural material to learn about the past." She loves maps and making maps. "Honestly maps are what brought me to archaeology and love for history. I have worked doing GIS for years and I am happy to use those skills to further archaeology and to make what we do more accessible to people." She believes that it is our responsibility to teach people about archaeology and history, "ALL archaeology is public archaeology." Most of her career has been working in organizations that are non-profits. That means wearing a bunch of hats. Archaeologists are bad at many things that are not archaeology!
