Surf Report - Ocean City MD Beaches
Good morning, beach lovers! Here's your surf zone forecast for Wednesday, June 17th through Sunday, June 22nd. Starting with today, conditions are pretty mellow across the board. Most areas are looking at around 2 feet of surf with low rip current risk, though that low risk disclaimer always applies near structures like piers and jetties where dangerous currents can pop up unexpectedly. Water temps are chilly in the upper 60s to lower 70s depending on where you are, so a wetsuit might not be a bad call. The sun's going to be fierce today with a very high UV index, so slather on that sunscreen. Expect mostly sunny skies with just a chance of showers, and highs will range from the upper 70s in Maryland to the mid 80s down in Virginia Beach. Winds will be light, generally from the southeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Now here's where things get interesting. Thursday is bringing a significant change. The Maryland beaches and Accomack-Northampton areas will see moderate rip current risk, so swimmers need to be extra cautious. Maryland's looking at 3 to 5 foot swell while the Eastern Shore tops out around 2 to 3 feet. Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks will maintain low rip risk but temperatures are climbing into the lower 90s with heat indices pushing up to 102. That's going to feel absolutely brutal on the sand. Southwest winds will pick up to around 20 miles per hour, creating some chop out there. Come Friday, Juneteenth, showers and storms move in across the region. Surf stays relatively small at 2 to 4 feet depending on location, and those storm chances mean outdoor beach time gets a bit dicey. Highs drop slightly into the lower to upper 80s with lighter winds from the west. Saturday looks like a real gem. High pressure settles in bringing sunny skies, light winds, and calm conditions. Surf flattens out to around 2 feet, perfect for families and casual swimmers. Highs in the low to mid 80s make it genuinely pleasant compared to Thursday's scorcher. Wrapping up Sunday, we stay sunny with similar low surf and nice temps in the upper 70s to low 80s. Winds stay light from the west. So here's the takeaway: enjoy today's mellow conditions, prepare for Thursday's heat and stronger rip currents especially in Maryland, ride out the storms Friday, then settle into a gorgeous weekend. And remember, even on low risk days, always respect the ocean and watch for those dangerous currents near structures. Have a fantastic beach week out there!
